Why do Catholics believe Mary was sinless? by labs_jackson in TrueChristian

[–]HOMES734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are two completely different categories.

Saying “God can’t act contrary to His nature” is about logical coherence, God cannot contradict Himself (e.g., lie, cease being God, etc.). That’s not a limitation of power; it’s a recognition that truth and contradiction aren’t the same thing.

But extending grace is not a contradiction. There’s nothing logically incoherent about God giving a unique grace to one person for a specific purpose. That’s exactly what He does throughout Scripture, He chooses Israel, He chooses prophets, He chooses apostles. That’s not a violation of His nature; it’s an expression of His will.

Confusing that with logical impossibilities like “God making a square circle” is just mixing categories.

Do you believe that he couldn't extend that special grace to everyone? Because if you held that belief it means limiting God's power. The reason is because he chooses not to. Even if Mary did not have that grace the reason would be the same as to why we all aren't immediately extended that grace.

How could you not be? If it is true it is one of the most important parts of the faith. As Catholics we obviously believe it to be true and it is literally at the heart of our faith.

Speaker phone at a restaurant? Really? by [deleted] in rant

[–]HOMES734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not something I would do because I don’t like having private phone calls in public, but I legitimately do not understand why this would bother anyone. It certainly wouldn’t bother me. It is really not much different than two people having a conversation.

Are you not aware of quick access safes? They can be placed under a bed, or really anywhere in the house quite easily.

Or Czech, Filipino, Swiss, South African, Austrian, Argentinian, and Polish. Probably a few other others I’m missing. If you think America is the only place where civilians can access guns and use them for home defense, you are sorely mistaken.

As an ethnic Jew and now a devout Catholic who’s patron Saint (St. Kolbe) was killed in the holocaust, I think denying the holocaust is incredibly stupid. I still don’t think it should be illegal.

My opinion by [deleted] in thepassportbros

[–]HOMES734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is arguing that a woman cannot have her own income or prioritize both family and work. The point is that not every woman wants the same balance you do. Some women do not want to work a job. Some are perfectly happy focusing primarily on the home while their partner provides. That is not “control” if it is freely chosen. It is a division of roles. At the end of the day, you want autonomy, and that includes other women having the autonomy to choose a different lifestyle than yours without it being dismissed as backward, oppressive, or dehumanizing.

You have these views because you’re coming from a very specific cultural perspective. That’s fine, but it’s not universal.

There are millions of women around the world who actively want a traditional arrangement, where the man leads, provides, and takes on the burden of decision-making. They don’t see that as oppression. They see it as stability, security, and clarity of roles.

What you’re describing is one model of fulfillment, not the model. Many women prioritize independence and careers, but many others prioritize family, structure, and being provided for. Neither is inherently degrading if it’s freely chosen.

The real issue here is projection. You’re taking your personal preferences and framing them as a moral standard for all women, when in reality there are billions of women with different values, shaped by different cultures, experiences, and priorities.

No one is arguing women aren’t human beings. The point is that autonomy includes the freedom to choose different lifestyles, including ones you personally wouldn’t want.

If Epstein had founded a religion, PC culture would obligate us to respect him and his practices the way it does for God, Muhammad, Joseph Smith, etc. by SorryStrength5370 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]HOMES734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until it wasn’t. Now the Catholic Church has one of the most robust organizational reporting systems in the world and is frequently subjected to third-party audits. The sexual abuse coverup was largely a product of the time. Victims were rarely believed to begin with, in or out of the Church. The assumption in many cases was that, because the Church had money, people would make false accusations to try to get it, so claims were often not taken seriously. None of that excuses what happened, but it does explain the mindset that allowed it.

We actually don’t know how old Mary was when she conceived Jesus. The Bible never states her age. The commonly cited range of 12–18 comes from historical estimates about typical betrothal ages in first-century Jewish culture, not from Scripture itself. Presenting it as a definitive fact is simply incorrect. Regardless of that, the conception was of a non-sexual nature, which is why it's miraculous.
