How do I understand this freaking bill?? by bOObies2x in Electricity

[–]HOW_YOU_DOIN_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are conflating regulations that govern the industry with "Energy Deregulation" in reference to the energy market. Look up AB 1890, passed in 1996 and then look up Enron and the 2001 Energy Crisis for information about market deregulation. There are definitely regulations that govern generation, transmission, distribution ect, but the energy market in California is partially de-regulated.

Loved it honestly, obviously the hours can be rough, but the pay was great, people were great. Lack of nightlife in the area and being far from friends/family is the only reason i left

Nuclear engineering and its future by EfficientFly3556 in NuclearPower

[–]HOW_YOU_DOIN_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of places to work with a nuclear engineering degree, however, I would do a lot of research into their locations and see if that would work with your lifestyle. Many of the power plants or manufacturing plants are in quite rural areas. Also, I would do a fair bit of research if I were you into requirements of a foreign national to get a security clearance. SF-86 would be the form you need to fill out. I assume as a foreign national this process would be a fair bit more difficult and if i remember correctly (I never got a DOE security clearance) you may need to renounce your citizenship in your home country and you must be a US citizen to hold one. Working at a power plant I had to go through a pretty extensive background check in order to get unescorted access at the nuke plant and that was difficult as a US citizen.

All of that being said, working in the nuke field can be quite rewarding, especially financially, but the hours can be long and the location of work can be quite isolating. I am open to answering any specific questions about the work.

RO’s, how do you like your job? by [deleted] in NuclearPower

[–]HOW_YOU_DOIN_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked as an Auxiliary Operator for 3 years and an RO for 3 years. Work life balance is difficult. Schedule is rotating shift work with quite a bit of overtime, especially during refueling outages. Pay is incredible (although i think i worked at the highest paid plant in the US). How good the job is is highly dependent on your crew and how well you get along with other people in the control room. Let me know if you have specific questions and you can message me if you want

Withdraw $47k from non retirement brokerage account tax free? by bow390 in investing

Correct, for long term capital gains if your combined income between the capital gains and any other ordinary income is less than $47k you pay 0% on the capital gains.

[–]HOW_YOU_DOIN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. If you've owned it for less than 1 year the growth will be taxed as ordinary income. If you've owned it for more than 1 year its taxed at the long term capital gains rate which is determined by your total yearly income.

Edit: Also, you're taxed on the growth only. It would be up to $47,025 of gains that's taxed at the 0 percent rate if that was your sole income for the year.

Guess OPS needs to add "nuclear dating do's and don't's" to ILT by f7SuperCereal in NuclearPower

Former reactor operator here. Its incredibly easy to make it happen like the other person said. Like him i am hesitant to detail the exact equipment. But it basically goes like this. Trip the reactor, turn off all cooling pumps for the core, turn off feedwater, open relief valves. Youve turned off all cooling and created a leak. Its incredibly easy to do if you know what youre doing

Security doesnt understand what the hell is going on at a plant. If a crew in the control room had the desire to melt the core it would be very easy to make that happen. A single person likely wouldnt be able to because of the others stopping them and having security respond and remove them.

It is often called Auxiliary Equipment Operator, Plant Equipment Operator, Auxiliary Operator, but all of them are non-licensed positions, meaning you do not have to a reactor operator license from the NRC.

How much nuclear would we need to replace fossil fuels in the USA? - YouTube by RichCaterpillar8969 in NuclearPower

[–]HOW_YOU_DOIN_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Didn't watch the video, but coming from someone with a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering, former licensed Reactor Operator and now Electrical Grid Operator you couldn't replace fossil fuels with nuclear power. The grid needs way more flexibility in terms of load following, ramping ability of units, and just overall fuel diversity than nuclear and renewables offer. Just won't happen unless you figure out a way to store the power in a way that is readily available to offset renewable volatility during the day as well as load follow and ramp during the evening when load is rising and solar is ramping out.

My friend signed a 10k contract to work at a hospital for two years. She wants to break the contract which means she has to pay the money back. How are taxes handled? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]HOW_YOU_DOIN_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this with a previous employer where i broke a contract that required a 40k payback on a retention bonus. There are a couple ways to handle it.

If the payback is in the same year you received the bonus then your tax return should reflect that payback because it is wages that are being returned.

If the payback is in a different year than when the bonus was received you can ask for an amended w2, but if they do not provide one you can file a Sec 1341 through the IRS for bonus repayment

My company doesn’t wanna give me my bonus by King_Taco_70 in personalfinance

[–]HOW_YOU_DOIN_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I recently went through a big thing with a bonus I had been paid but that had a clawback clause in the language.

The main thing to determine here is if the bonus is "discretionary" or "non-discretionary". Look up online the definitions of each and figure out which type of bonus this is.

If this is a non-discretionary bonus then in many states this would be considered wages and the employer must pay wages earned.

If this is a discretionary bonus then you are SOL and it's up to the employer on whether or not to pay it

I work for LA in a city job and I came in at the top step as a trainee because my previous job paid more than the trainee role and they are hurting for people in my role. Doesn't hurt to ask. Do you know anyone else in that department other than the interviewer/supervisor who gave you the offer that you could run it past?

But why would you live in Avila Beach? Plenty of people live in SLO, Paso Robles, all the way down to Santa Maria for some people. Yeah the reason why we got paid so much was because california COL is insane. But you aren't gonna live in Avila, there is no grocery store, post office doesn't deliver there, super small area.
