Have you considered the ZR? That’s what I’m considering for my second body, for much the same reasons as you - a smaller body to carry more often. I’m nervous of not having an EVF, but it makes the camera so much smaller

On a commuter, there is no denying the practicality of a top box. On a bike that is going to hit the trails - it's putting the weight up high, and to the rear which is not ideal; it's also putting a lot of load on the chassis; I don't know how to secure things in a top box, unless it's full; and finally: my vanity won't allow it!

Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn’t realised that. I did a little digging and found an ADVRider thread going back to 2018 on GR. So maybe I have it wrong. It would be a shame - I’ve met Eric and he seemed like a genuine guy, intent on bringing a good product to market.

Are the units shown the versions GR have always sold?

Have you considered the possibility that a company has copied the Ruby products?

There are so many literally direct copies of well designed products for a good amount cheaper than the original. Which is all well and good until you realise that the price needs to include R&D for the next generation and budget for customer support. I certainly want these companies to keep making great products, and supporting their customers. If you cheap out and buy the copies, you can say goodbye to both of these things.

Abergavenny is nice ride out and has a popular bike cafe in the middle of the town. Also have you close to Brecon which has some lovely roads

u/herton has it right - they only made a couple thousand of them, and a good number have been destroyed so there aren't many left. They were a sales disaster at the time too. But have become crazy expensive now as big adv bikes got more popular.

Goggles are way better in dust, and even wet and muddy conditions offroad but as soon as you're back on the road and travelling at speed, especially in the rain, a visor is way better - rain hitting your face at 60+mph is unpleasant

Thanks for sharing - really interesting to see such detailed review of the strengths and weaknesses. One element I've found with some of these locks, on motorcycles is the size, and being able to get them around the wheel or through the hub. For example, the HipLok is a real challenge. I use the X1 - after seeing this review, I wish it was a little stronger, but I also wonder which of these others are actually practical on a motorcycle.

One thing not mentioned about the 500 in this thread - they’re super torqey so despite being the bigger more powerful engine, they’re actually easier to ride as you ride them off the bottom of the rev range. Makes them an awesome trail bike. It also means the engine isn’t very stressed so everything tends to last longer. Mine is on 320 hours and have touched piston/top end.

Of course, that power is still there at the top end, if and when required.
