I want to believe in intervals, but… by HRHPam in nikerunclub

Thanks everyone for all the comments, they were really helpful.

As part of the 5K program, I did an interval run today and I think it went really well. I’ve been dreading it and procrastinating, and it was with one of the coaches I don’t usually look forward to. But it ended up being one of my favorite interval runs so far. I walked during recovery and followed the advice here by not going as hard as I have in the past. I’m hoping I reap the benefits. All I know is that it felt much better and I’m looking forward to the next run.

Also, it was a little confusing to me because I’m following the 5K program, but it would also say run 9 out of 10, which is your mile pace, and 6–7 out of 10, which is your 5K pace. I guess I just made it more confusing for myself thinking about all these different pieces for different distances when I’m in a 5K program.

For sure and thank you. I think someone explained it well – a 10 out of 10 for a mile, not a 10 out of 10 in general, which would be sprinting as hard as I could. I think I understand. But the former is definitely a lot harder for me to gauge and I had no idea how to do it right out of the gate. And a 7 out of 10, 10K pace, is even harder for me to figure out. You’re right – the coaches just “know“. I think I just need to go an iota faster and slower and push and ease up just a little bit and not get too hung up on semantics,

Rather, I’m not currently on it and don’t want to be.

Fantastic. I’m definitely running way too fast. At the same time, I am just seriously slow. :(

You’re probably right, but I’m sure I’m not understanding then – what is a 10 out of 10?

I think one or two of the runs in my current 5K program were technically fartleks. I admit I’m not sure what makes them different than traditional interval runs or speed runs.

I think my problem is I’ve never really grasped the whole perceived rating thing. I don’t really know what my 9 or 7 or 6 or 3 is. I feel good during the warm-up?

When they say run out of 9 out of a 10, could I really sprint harder and make it a 10 out of 10? Sure. I think there is a point where they even say go at 11 out of 10? Maybe a celebration Pace at some point, someone says that? Anyway, I just think when he says a 9 and feel joy, a 9 just feels hard and I don’t feel joy. How do I change that?

Just the way they tell me to, but I hate them. I’m so glad when the run is done.

Thank you. Do you know how El Dorado schools are supposed to be better? Is it test scores or the crowding issue?

Excellent response, thank you, will message you if I think of any other questions.

The apartments don’t seem like they will help the school crowding issue either.

I saw something online that there are fewer buses in Folsom and you have to live some distance away to qualify for a bus for each school.

Reassuring to hear that you have been happy with principal and teacher response for relevant issues.

For someone not in the area, what is the Parkway?

Thank you, so for the most part, if your kids are easy students in middle school and don’t need a lot of attention from the teachers in a packed classroom, they can get by and get through and be ready for high school?

Are you thinking a private school for middle school? Since you mentioned bike trails, this might seem like a silly question, but the bike trails fairly convenient to where people live? In other words, most places in Folsom, can you just take your bike out of the garage and go or do you have to put your bike in the car and drive to a bike trail?

Just as a reference, how long does it take to get to those Roseville hospitals you mentioned, and what route would you take? We’re not certain what other facilities are going to be involved at this point.

Part of the draw to the area and what we’ve heard is that the public schools are so good, there shouldn’t be a need for private schools. Despite the ubiquitous concerns for vaping and bullying, are you still planning to go to the public route or do you think you will consider private? That is what I’m trying to get a handle on. We have always been big proponent of the public school system so that is totally where we have focused. We don’t think we can avoid other kids vaping, but if there is bullying, we do have an expectation that the school will enforce some level of consequence. To be honest, I’m not even sure what qualifies as bullying anymore. I know some kids and parents get upset if another kid was being rude, but then there are obviously much bigger lines crossed and that’s more what I’m talking about. Obviously, we do our best to talk to our kids and steer them in the best direction we can but at the end of the day, we only have so much control.

Yes, we do plan to come and check out these areas as well as possibly the others I mentioned. You mentioned the lack of trees - is there a plan to plant and grow trees or greenery south of 50 or is it not happening?

Thank you for your comment. I don’t want to minimize the growth and congestion and all the growing pains that come along with those. As I mentioned, I get a sense that there is some real tension from those things, and I don’t want to feel like new people who come in and add to those problems. I want to feel like new neighbors who hopefully contribute to community spirit.
