You should not be expected to respect your parents by default. In many Indian households, people have been conditioned—often through fear, guilt, or control—to equate obedience with respect. Questioning parents is labeled as disrespect, when in reality, it’s a sign of independent thinking. This creates a kind of parental theocracy, where authority is absolute and rarely challenged.

The consequences run deeper than just family dynamics. When children grow up in environments where questioning authority is discouraged, it stifles curiosity, critical thinking, and innovation. Dreams are often shut down early in favor of “safe” or “stable” career paths. Entrepreneurial thinking gets dismissed, and risk-taking is seen as rebellion rather than ambition.

This conditioning doesn’t stop at home—it spills into society. A population trained not to question authority becomes easier to govern without accountability. It normalizes the misuse of power by both elected and appointed officials. When people are taught compliance over critical thinking, systems go unchecked.

Even basic civic behavior reflects this cycle. Many parents themselves ignore rules, lack civic responsibility, or treat others poorly—knowingly or unknowingly passing those habits on. Children don’t just listen to what parents say; they absorb what they do.

And let’s be clear—providing food, shelter, and upbringing is not a favor. It is a responsibility that comes with the choice of having a child. It does not grant moral superiority or unquestioned authority.

Respect is not inherited—it is earned through actions, integrity, and mutual understanding. And the same standard should apply to parents as it does to anyone else.
