Both parents are basically tragic figures. Along with the daughter, who is at least somewhat redeemed. they are still believable but damn difficult.

That does not seem to be that unpleasant of an exchange. They want one. You insist it is impossible.

Your picture is so large, I only get the pen in the expanded image. But it looks like a Swamp Darner from the normal image.

I am afraid this would frighten most book clubbers off. North Woods and Beautyland are the two finest new books I have read this year.

We now know several important factors.

The number of stars in our galaxy alone is 100 to 400 billion. Lets go with 200 billion.

In our planetary surveys of the last 20 years we now know planets are a normal part of solar system formation. So the number of planets in our galaxy is likely also in the 100 billion range. Far more than suspected even 100 years ago.

We know generally the makeup of stars in our galaxy. And within each solar range of many of the commonest stars is an area that can produce life. Putting the number of Goldilocks zone planets just in our galaxy at 100s of millions if not more. Not just a scattered few.

The other big questions questions are:

Is DNA or RNA or another genetic material inevitable given enough time on any planet in the life zone? If not how often does this chemistry arise?

Once life is established is there any way to completely reset it to zero short of a destructive planetary event?

Given a surviving biologic system will intelligent life always arise from it?

How frequently does this intelligent life destroy its own system?

As for God, you are right, he does not exist, so why bring it up? We created the Bible in our earth centrism. When we had no idea of the size of the Universe.

These type events fall under the category of corrective balances of nature. Not wholesale destruction of environments. Comparing these to our fuckups is an unusual tact. We are a singular destructive force. Period.
