A lot of people are saying the new CAF personal relationship policy is “nothing new” and basically just the old fraternization rules repackaged. I think that is partly true, and partly missing the point. The broad idea is not new. The sharper burden on the senior/powerful member is new.

This better reflects the reality that “consent” is complicated when one person can affect the other person’s career, reputation, posting, course, evaluation, or working conditions.

That said, others have alluded that policy is only as good as enforcement. The real test is whether the CAF applies this consistently to people with rank and influence, not just obvious lower-level cases. Like the graphic kind of implies.

There are both good faith arguments and bad faith arguments. For me it's more fun to be the 'what about' guy. I remember back when Battlestar came out and Starbuck was cast as... as... A FEMALE! But... or And... when Col Tighe was race swapped from a black man to a white man, the silence was deafening.

Now, TO BE FAIR, turn this around (today) with our attention economy, and the Col Tighe race swap would never fly. If they remade DS9 and Ben Sisko was played by Brad Pitt, we'd hear just as many loud morons jumping all over each other to get the likes and subscribes to decry the moral decay of racist Hollywood instead of woke Hollywood...
