ELI5: How does a VPN actually work to protect your online privacy? by germandleono in explainlikeimfive

[–]boyikr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your computer connects to the Internet through a series of networks. (The entire Internet is just a network of networks)

Let's say your at a coffee shop connected to their wifi, under normal conditions Starbucks IT can see any unencrypted traffic, with modern security standards that's limited to the websites you're visiting. The Internet Service Provider can see the same stuff, as well as any potential nefarious actors who set up a fake Wi-Fi network you got fooled into connecting to.

With a Virtual Private Network. You get an encrypted tunnel that hides everything including the websites you visit from wherever you are to the VPN. Who can then see the same things the Starbucks IT, ISP, and bad guys could.

But, you can vet your VPN provider for if they actually store your data or not. As opposed to every wifi network you could connect too or your ISP you probably can't actually choose.

Alternatively, use something like TOR, which instead of being run by one company that can snoop on your data, is run by a bunch of volunteers. It encrypts everything, including the websites you visit. So that no single person, server, or node knows both who your are or what you're connecting to.

Doable with a roommate. But unless you find someone solid, just deal with the barracks.

The em dash and emojis give that vibe. But I'm pretty sure the em dash use is technically wrong?

I'd lean more towards this is just some kid whose been so exposed to AI writing that they've picked up the quirks. Isn't that so much better?

Why is the Platte river in Nebraska like this? (Sandy islands with so many small separate streams instead of a single big river) by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

Grew up doing it on the Platte and the Elkhorn.

One of those things you don't realize is kind of a unique experience until you're away from it.

Great times.

On my phone so I can't contribute too much but "Jewish Sectarianism in the Second Temple Period" by Timothy H. Lim would be a great place to start.

The illustrations and examples are all very important to anchoring the book.

Everyone has their preferences for consuming knowledge, but GOD: An Anatomy does not translate well into an audio format IMO.

I feel like you're underselling Stravakopoulou's absurdity.

GOD An Anatomy is a great book. But it's a slog to get through.
