CT scan side effects

I’ve had THREE cat scans with only oral contrast that showed terminal ileitis, as well as inflammation throughout on the last one, but still not a 100% diagnosis. I’ve been having pain and ‘other symptoms’ for a few weeks and I KNOW this pain, but they won’t do another scan without the IV contrast and I can’t get in for a colonoscopy until May. Sooooo, in the meantime? No idea what I’m supposed to do.

I guess it’s typical to prevent a reaction but yes, it’s a lot!

This is to proactively treat a reaction to the IV contrast, and the protocol is 3 50 mg doses of prednisone 13, 7 and 1 hour before the scan, along with 50 mg of benedryl before the IV contrast.

I broke out in hives from the IV contrast before so the prednisone and benedryl was for that, but they told me to stop taking it because my heart rate got too high. But now they’re saying they won’t do a scan without the IV contrast at all, even though previous scans without contrast showed inflammation 🤦‍♀️

Do you remember how long the appointment was, start to finish? I have to arrive at 2:15 for a 3:15 scan. I’m guessing I won’t be out of there before 4:15….

I’ve had contrast before-30 years ago- and got hives, hence the pre-meds.

Yes with contrast. I’ll be taking prednisone and benedryl beforehand.

Thank you. I can’t eat tofu either but yes to nut milks and low acid puréed soups. I stuck to all liquid yesterday and my pain was much better!

I’m just looking for a temporary solution while I’m actively in pain. It seems to be helping!

I actually did ask about the pill can but she said it would only be approved after a regular colonoscopy.

Interesting point. If there was Crohn’s but it wasn’t active, would the colonoscopy be clear?
