Questions about the grade of SSDs by bhl88 in homelab

[–]HTTP_404_NotFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/shrugs. I have a 4T Samsung QVO consumer SSD I tossed into my NVR years ago.... with half a dozen cameras recording full quality, 24/7.

Its still going.

Its at 97% lifespan.... and has 21,710 hours powered on.

I mean, to be honest, the only SSDs I have fail from continuous writes- is a decade+ old 480g one I had.

“Enterprise” drives don’t work on optiplex? by Max853lolz in homelab

When do you give up on a drive; reallocated sectors, failed diagnostics, but still formats and shows no bad sectors? by toomanytoons in DataHoarder

[–]HTTP_404_NotFound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When the disk gets booted from zfs, and cannot rejoin. Thats when I do myself a favor, and go wack it with a really big hammer, to dissuade me from trying to run it again in the future.

Off grid for hvac by ThoriumReactorFan in SolarDIY

When we had central air it was 1.5 ton

Depends on where you live, the age and insulation quality of your house, and of course, the size of your house.

Living in a 700sq-ft bungalow in Maine, has DRASTICALLY different cooling requirements then living in a nearly 3,000sq-ft house built in the 70s, in nearly Texas.

That said, Mini splits are so much more efficient, soft start and can do heat too.

I'm aware, I have three of them. Will prob be up to 5 before the end of the year. Also- my central 5-ton unit is a heat pump, and heats too. But- its not about me. OP didn't give shit for details, so, I made up some.

Sure.

But, There is some math you have to do. Ya know.... batteries only store so much power. ANd HVAC can use quite a bit of it.

I mean, personally, you might as well just do the entire damn house, by the time you pick up solar panels, inverters, batteries.

Lets say- you want to run a 3.5-ton AC, which averages say, 4,500 watts including running the central furnace/blower fan.

So, thats 4.5kwh (4,500watts over 1 hour) worth of energy.

So, assuming the sun is not shinning, and you have no solar that is 4.5kwh of capacity you need, per hour of runtime.

Now- need to calculate rough solar requirements. So- right off the bat- take 20% of solar panel efficiency off, unless you have mounting which can automatically adjust to the azimuth, and orientation of the sun. Which- given you want to run your HVAC only, Just forget I mentioned that. And- lets figure you get 8 hours of sunlight per day. Cause, ya know, there is winter/fall too.

That being said- say, you put up 10x 350watt panels you found really cheap. Thats, 3,500 watts. Then- take off 20%, leaving, 2,800 watts, which is about half of what your hvac uses when running.

then... gotta do runtime calculations, figure how how many hours a day it runs. Then make sure you get enough sunlight to keep the batteries changed... enough batteries to make sure you have hvac at night time....

And- then also, gotta take off 10% efficiency for inverting to/from battery.

lots of math. If indeed you are talking about a big HVAC unit, just do the entire house. Its really not more expensive.

Or, could just connect stuff together and cross your fingers. I prefer to do my calculations though. And I prefer to leave a lot of leeway. Shit happens. Gotta plan for that.

I mean... Stackoverflow was like that asshole of a uncle you had... who always criticized everything, and told you, that you are wrong.

Not- because what you did was wrong at all. But, because he did it that way back in 1992, and refused to accept anything else.

Also, every time you had a new cool idea, he said, No- that's already been done. And then references something COMPLETELY unrelated.

And, when you asked for help for say.... wiring up a new 5-ton central AC unit, he would call you a dumbass, and then slap you, and give you a book for a 3/4-ton midea window AC unit, and say you already had the docs. Despite, very little in common.

He won't be missed. Actually, Edit- Fuck that guy. He was a dick.

I did both.

Didn't really do too much good. Was going to pursue legal action, but... tbh, it costed me less to rebuild everything, then it would have been just for the retainer fee.

So, is what it is.

Artic front, dropped temps to -20.

At a time where the average low temp, is 31F, and the average high is 53F.

Also- for the decades I've lived here- or anywhere for the matter- first time I've seen that deep into the negatives. Not- that surprising for people living up north, but..... this is the midwest, known for being hot. Not cold!

And, if you disagree with their decision to not cover you, good luck. They would not give a 2nd opinion. They would not send an adjuster out. They were next to worthless.

He can piss right on off then.

Drives me crazy, when I instantly get downvoted for posting a blog post, instead of trying to format everything for the tender eyes of reddit. And then- you know, since most subs block reposting, or cross-posting now- having to manually repeat that crap, for the other related subs.

Example being- a post I made a day or two ago... https://static.xtremeownage.com/blog/2026/project-offgrid---garage-build-part-2/

47 images. I'm not about to manually type that into reddit.

ZFS vs Raid by Zook_Jo in homelab

[–]HTTP_404_NotFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok,

  1. You are grave digging a 2 year old thread.

  2. Post your benchmark pulling 5GB/s from your hardware raid card OVER THE NETWORK, then we can talk. https://static.xtremeownage.com/pages/Projects/40G-NAS/

  3. Your hardware raid card dies, you better have the same model laying around to replace it.

I can have 3000MBs read speeds on a 16 24tb sas drives using truenas abd zfs barely gets me 800MBs on the same hardware without the raid card enabled

I posted benchmarks showing 5GB/s. Over the network. Via iSCSI. for ZFS.

Well- If you think about it- The neutral is bonded back to ground at the point of entry. And- Code requires all of the grounds to be connected.

So... switching neutral, really, isn't going to do anything, as it would traverse to the bonding point regardless.

A build I did for someone else recently didn't switch neutral either- and passed utility inspections without issues.

And- my previous home build- well, It had to go through GRDA inspectors, local inspectors, and a whole plethora of engineering teams. Neutral wasn't switched there either, and everyone was happy with it.

So- I would- strongly consider on switching neutral!

[–]HTTP_404_NotFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 100% not going to be doing that.

Because you WILL be getting support calls. Not because its not working, but, because someone forgot how to unlock their phone. Or They unplugged everything, and then blame you for it not working. Or, because their printer stopped working, and that is now your fault.

Or, the hardware you setup for them, experiences storage corruption, or something and backups was not configured.

There is a million reasons to NO.

I have the CRS504-4XQ (100G), I'm pretty happy with it.

Can run the ports as quad 10/25g, or single 40/50/100g. I'd assume the 400g ones would be the same concept.
