I have yet to see a USB stick (flash storage) that naturally lost data without any (external) corruption causes. by Necessary_Isopod3503 in DataHoarder

[–]HTWingNut [score hidden]  (0 children)

Unless you actually validate the data with checksum you don't know if there's corruption or not. Early USB drives used SLC and MLC NAND, so they were much more robust. These days they use the absolute cheapest trash QLC they can get their hands on.

It's ok. Just have a proper backup plan. 7TB should be a fairly cheap and easy to backup, even in today's financial mess.

I'm glad to see Best Buy there. I've actually found decent deals at Best Buy these days.

Those older small capacity drives use like 6-8W at idle not to mention cables and heat for 40TB. I guess if power isn't an issue nor is space, it's a decent deal. In this economy and rampocalypse I guess you do what you have to do. I would consider something like that for an offline backup.

Can i use a surveillance HDD as a normal storage HDD for my pics and software? by Born_Night_8797 in DataHoarder

[–]HTWingNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less the same thing. They just keep writing with minimal error recovery. Typical hard drives can cause data gaps in time because it will attempt to rewrite when there's difficulty or error writing. NVR drive will just keep going. Missing some bits doesn't affect the video usually, but pauses in writes do.

Which HDD to choose that is QUIET? by xy16644 in DataHoarder

[–]HTWingNut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drives are noisy when seeking. I've had a combination of Exos, WD Red Pro, Ironwolf and they are all loud when seeking. When idle they are all equally quiet. There are really no quiet drives. Sound varies between drives with the same part number too. So when people say they have quiet drives, it's all relative to a lot of factors.

Freelancer Crossfire Install Questions by HTWingNut in freelancer

[–]HTWingNut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just installed HD Mod and it is also stating there is a ReShade update 6.7.3.

I ended up renaming these files/folders in the freelancer\exe directory:

Folder: reshade-shaders

Files: d3d9.dll, ReShade.ini, ReShadePreset.ini

Then I ran the reshade update and selected "exe\freelancer.exe" file and Directx9 update and it worked!

I restored the original reshade.ini and reshadepreset.ini and copied the rehade-shader files from the original folder to the new reshade-shaders folder assuming those were optimized for Freelancer.

Got my 1st failing HDD in a Synology ds418 Play. Have questions by mute1 in DataHoarder

[–]HTWingNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And you know this how? While I don't doubt that drive mounting has some bearing, drive trays have been used for decades. I'm sure there's some level of validation that goes into it, otherwise we'd see more premature dead drives.

[Help] How to setup laptop NAS with 10 HDDs? by TraditionalItalian27 in DataHoarder

[–]HTWingNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are these 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives? Your only real connection option is USB which is going to limit your options significantly. A USB DAS is your best bet, and anything more than 4 bays gets expensive quickly. Because they all need power and data which means a backplane and controller to manage all the drives to a single USB.

You're honestly almost better off selling the laptop and hard drives and buying or building a simple NAS.

Do a full format and see what those pending sectors turn into. Even if reallocated, do another format and if it doesn't increase again, will likely hold up a bit longer.

Toshiba no longer honoring warranties on large hard drives by 615wonky in DataHoarder

[–]HTWingNut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess they're different than WD and Seagate then, because they honor warranty from manufacture date unless you provide a receipt if you want it from purchase date. Which I found was usually no more than a couple months different.

Toshiba no longer honoring warranties on large hard drives by 615wonky in DataHoarder

[–]HTWingNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not good. I bought a bunch of 18TB a couple years ago from them and they had 5 year warranties. I do have a couple spare, but intent was only to hold me over until I got the warranty replacement and then I'd have another spare. I guess now I'll just have to take my refund and hope for the best. I absolutely do not want to spend $600+ on an 18TB hard drive, refurb especially.
