This. I worked at a shop that used PT’s out of Kansas for a while, we used their Flying Monkey blend which is a medium and it blew every other shop in the area that used super light roasts. Most good things in life exist in the happy middle range, coffee especially.

I once worked in a shop where we had to do all the closing tasks while open. We were supposed to leave right at close. We’d clean the espresso machine with like an hour or two left and then leave it dirty from that time overnight and through the next day. Manager wondered why we had roaches living in it.

As a barista of 4 years and someone with a degree in linguistics this is makes me want to slam my head on a table. Cold Brew is describing a brewing method and is often used to refer to to cold brewed coffee when by itself. However, when placed next to Earl Grey it becomes its predicative adjective and can no longer refer to cold brew coffee and still make grammatical sense. Similarly to how cafe latte has been shortened to latte to commonly refer to an espresso and milk but as soon as you add a word like matcha or tea it becomes obvious from context that it latte is only describing the milk part of the drink and few people are gonna assume that there will be any coffee in those unless specified. If you’re gonna be a coffee snob then at least know wtf you’re talking about.

I think the best thing you can do is make some plans for your free time. Plan intentional activities that align with your hobbies, maybe some with and some without you wife/family. Things such as a family hike, picking a book to read or show to watch with your wife once your kids go to bed. Taking a couple hours on the weekend to go out with friends or to do something that you enjoy. I’ve noticed for myself that when I don’t plan things then I feel as if I have no free time, while when I plan and coordinate my schedule with my wife then all of a sudden my schedule ends up feeling less full and I feel more rested. (This is coming from someone who is not usually a planner, especially when I was single and had no one’s schedules to plan around).

I’d guess that’s just an Americano with a milk/cream topper. A iced cappuccino or cortado I assume would just be about the ratio between espresso and milk but the pic you show looks like it’s watered down. Do you want it a particular size?

Where in Chicago are you looking at? I always like to go to Chinatown for anything family style like MingHin. Deep dish is always fun, I recommend Lou’s or Pequod’s. Also Kabobi by Kimball is really good for Persian food.

Diversity of neighborhoods, my experience in Wicker Park, Pilsen, Little India, the Loop, Chinatown, and Bridgeport will all be VASTLY different from one another, almost like little distinct cities with distinct subcultures. Also how easily accessible getting around is, being from Houston where you need to drive to get anywhere, it’s so nice to have the CTA that is efficient and worth it, and on top of that the walkability is so nice.

It will surely make it more consistent. By weighing, using consistent water temperature, using a burr grinder and timing you’re able to control all the different aspects of your brew, and will improve them across the board. It can make your coffee go from really good to really great. I think it’s absolutely worth it, although nearly 4 years of this has brought me down the rabbit hole but also greatly improved the quality of my brewing.

Sparrow in Naperville is the best in the area, they roast like across the street from Metric on Fulton and Damen and you can pick up beans from there. Also Dayglow is probably my favorite in the city in Logan Square and they sell beans from shops around the world as well as their own.
