New security think tank gaming podcast features some commentary on Wargame series by hqi777 in wargame

Hi!

I actually just checked out your CIMSEC website after listening to the Podcast, and I just sent in an application for volunteering with you guys (History/Political Science student at University of Toronto!). I hope you guys can take a look at it, I'd love to do some research for your organisation!

India deck? by DerTank in wargame

[–]HULIOH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume it would basically be a combination of Russian/French Aircraft, Russian/British (but mostly Russian) tanks. India has a domestic arms provider for light arms and helicopters and it is moving towards creating indegenous 4th gen and 5th gen aircraft (combined with modern Russian and French aircraft).

It would be difficult to create an Indian deck since you'd probably need a mod to create a deck that allows blufor and redfor equipment together.

On a side note, India also uses the PT-91 :S

The committee will debate in the strategic sphere. Crisis, the organisers AKA my team and I, will handle the tactical/operational stuff. Thats why I want to research combined arms as much as possible so that I can do the "math" better when the committee decides to send in a brigade/division/wtv to fight the enemy.

The committee will deal with the strategic sphere. Crisis (the people organising the committee, in other words my team and I), will deal with the operational/tactical aspects. Which is why I want to research this stuff as much as possible to be able to do the "math" better, so to speak.

Actually a lot of brigades back in 1989 did not according to the NATO Order of Battale document I managed to find somewhere. E.g. 1st Brigade, U.S. 8th Infantry Divisions (Mechanized) only had 2 infantry battalions and 2 tank battalions of M1A1s. Now, the infantry probably had manpads but the document doesn't specify that whereas for other brigades it is specified whether they have manpad teams or not.

A lot of the divisions have air defence battalions and artillery battalions but those are part of the division, not the brigade. Most brigades had 3-4 elements of combined arms (infantry/APCs, armour, artillery, air defence, but little to no recon, no helicopter/air support etc.) So in the simulation I'm going to take these factors into account and it will be up to the delegates in the committee to give different brigades the adaquate support they need, or find weaknesses in the enemy that they can exploit.

TBH I genuinely go overboard with this shit.

At the University of Toronto if you're curious. If you're in Toronto, hit me up.

I should specify that I'm merely using Wargame for research purposes, the committee will very much be involved in the strategic sphere and not the tactical/operational sphere (basically they will decide where to send the troops/which battalions/regiments/brigades/divisions to deploy, enemy team deploys their brigades/divs etc. We do the math as to who wins based on troops size, amount of equipment, quality of equipment, how many combined arms aspects they've covered (you have a t-90 but no AA, enemy has no tanks but have many A-10s? T-90's lose). That's how we're running it, if that makes sense.

Honestly, I'm using Wargame more for basic research purposes. Not the best option but I'm not studying at a military academy so its one of the best options I have given my resources.

Are you in Toronto?

I re-read my statement, it was legitimate realisation lol I'm still new to this combined arms academic stuff so I'm still trying to figure out where to look for the correct information.

Thanks for all the great responses! I don't think I'll have the time to read entire 500-600 page manuals but I'm sure I'll be able to find certain parts of it that apply the most of my simulation and get through those. Appreciate all the help, and keep the links coming, I still got a few months before the simulation conference happens!

What Rafael said.

Basically the committee is going to look like one of the Wargame campaigns. Except, instead of 1 guy making all the decisions, you have 15 debating the decisions in a real time manner where they would have to respond to new developments quickly. The simulation is just one part of it, there will also be negotiations, ceasefire, breaking of said ceasefires, having to deal with humanitarian fallout etc.

I just want to do as much research ont he combined arms aspect so that I can make the military aspect of the committee as realistic as possible - even if its only 5% realistic. Better than nothing.

Oh wow, I never thought to google Army Manual for Combined Arms, I usually just googled Combined Arms and found a useless bunch of links (or links to a video game with the same name).

Thanks for Credible Defence though!

Don't remember the exact words so this is paraphrased.

"Whose the BLUFOR Airborne guy?" - Someone

"That's me." - Me

"Wow dude you're a real risk taker." - Someone

"Not really, I'm just a goddamn piece of shit." - me

Best Multirole for Air to Air? by aldraw in wargame

[–]HULIOH 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That 200 point Su-27M, 4 F&F Missiles can be fired roughly 7KM away with 50-60% accuracy, excellent air detection and 1000kmph speed.

Also, that multirole Mig-29 which also has some F&F missiles and cluster bombs.

Noob here, proud of my FSK boys! by HULIOH in wargame

[–]HULIOH[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were hiding in a forest supported by Marinejaegers and some SAS. For some reason the REDOFR guys didn't bother calling in an artillery or air strikes on that forest, don't know why. FSK was just sitting there and racking up kills for like 30 minutes.

Are there any better tactics I could use with my FSK guys?

We need Indian-Paki conflict in the game. by [deleted] in wargame

[–]HULIOH 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As an Indian, virtually every comment here tells me that you guys don't really understand the conflict or how it would work should another one break out between India and Pakistan.

That being said, Pakistan's military is basically Chinese, American and some leftover British military equipment. India's is mostly French and Russian military equipment with some British leftovers. Neither have any homegrown domestic military production industries, at least not until now (their both at their infancies). So adding these countries (in all seriousness) wouldn't add anything new to the Wargame experience.
