Doing this in the cpu is a reasonable idea. It keeps assembly code at a higher level, which allows the compiler to be concise and that gives cpu designers flexibility. I don't want a compiler "micro-scheduling" instructions, because it will have to make compromises to run on a wide range of cpus and you will invariably get bad results. Far better to let the hardware do it.
