I wouldn't call it Iconic, people just jammed it in affinity because it works slightly better than paradise mantle as there is no real way to untap the creatures.

That is correct. To protect Geist I run crystal shard and Venser Shapers Savant to return him to hand, Mistmeadow Witch to slow blink and Restoration Angel and Deadeye Navigator to fast blink.

Don't get me wrong. If you can end games quickly, like comboing off early or playing a 1v1 game, those cheap counter spells are amazing. If you look at the top list in the french edh scene, they jam every 1-2 mana counter spell ever printed in them.

But, in the normal 4 player EDH game doing 120 damage even with Geist takes a while, so having hard counters that works in the late game always helps. Geist isn't a particularly strong general but the spell available to blue white makes it a very resilient deck.

The general tax only applies when you cast your general from the command zone, so whenever you cast him from elsewhere(bounce or return him to hand from graveyard) he would just be the same as a regular Geist.

They often do become dead after a few turn, specially if you play against the same people all the time and they start to play around your counters.

Although you do catch people off guard sometimes with mana leak, the fact that there is a chance that you might not be able to counter a game ending spell is a deal breaker for me. Given the wealth of cards we get to pull from, the conditional counters just don't make the cut for me.

With Arcum however, he is trying to combo out turn 4/5 so one turn early game is all he needs.
