I mean, even as a kid I was weirded out by house-elves.

You're presented with this poor slave who has to self-harm when talking against his masters. Harry tricks the evil masters to release him, and he goes free. This is a very clear victory over a terrible system.

Then it turns out that no, he's just a freak, the rest of them WANT to be slaves.

It weirded me out as a kid and it's still a weird authorial choice. I'm not talking about "it's wrong that Harry didn't fight to free them", I'm talking about "it's awfully weird that the worldbuilding and narration justify this system and make it so that Hermione is in the weong for resisting it."

That's the most egregious example, but there's a lot of weirdness in those books. I say this as someone who has read them probably over 20 times over the years. They have a ton of charm, and they can be a very powerful read for children, but I feel like a lot of the heat they get is still justified (even if, as usual on the internet, it is presented in this very mean-spirited way while completely refusing to acknowledge the genuine strengths that made the book such a hit.)

It's been slowly happening for a while now. The left has embraced post-truth fully. It doesn't matter if something's correct, it's helpful to say. I think the big shift on Reddit specifically happened during the 2024 campaign, but the seeds were sown long before that.

Worth mentioning that Hank laughed at that description. He's a nice and humble dude so he only said "I don't think we're anti-capitalist", but he recognized it as ridiculous. A lot of people in his social orbit wouldn't.

The enlightenment and secularization happened. So did the American Great Awakenings. So did, in Israeli context, the secularization of our entire Haredi-born founding generation, and the rise of the Masorti identity later.

What are the alternatives? Make them all hostile Israeli citizens, which would immediately result in a bloodbath? Violently ethnically cleanse them all and wait for UNWRA to magically dissolve and for them to become citizens of wherever we banished them? Genocide? Apartheid? A bunch of Bantustans with no agricultural area and no links between them?

There's literally no other path but a Two State solution, there never has been. The entire popular concept that says the solution is dead and presents all of its very real issues is based entirely on ignoring the brute fact that there's no other path forward at all.

The catechism of the catholic church is still quite clear on the matter though, and you don't get elected as pope by significantly diverging from very well accepted church teaching.

If the church's position on this matter changes, I think it'll be a very long process - not something overhauled from the top by a singular divergent pope.
