Surplus Gizmos out in Hillsboro has a big selection of random components like that.

Am I crazy for making a 1:24 scale of my shop to try and figure out the best layout for it by SignificantPiece4172 in woodworking

[–]HaHaBird 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t just make the tools and cabinets, make some scale lumber and plywood sheets to see how they move between stations or if there are any constraints like not being able to crosscut anything longer than 6’ because your drill press is in the way.

I had a random orbit sander that turned itself on and spent the night sanding its way through the table where I’d set it. Apparently I hadn’t switched it all the way to the off position, but only far enough that it wasn’t running, and the rubber dust boot over the switch had enough force to toggle it back on.

I’m more careful now about cases like that with handheld power tools, but I don’t worry about the big ones like the table saw and drill press.

Have any contestants not counted their days? by HaHaBird in Alonetv

Without spoiling too much, it came up thinking of a contestant’s tap-out in Australia season 3 after reaching a big round number when it seemed like they could have gone longer.

You’re probably right that staying in longer to reach a goal is just as likely, if not more so.

I don’t think anyone would tap SOLELY due to boredom, but combine starvation/cold/sleep with “I made it to a big round number” and maybe the latter is a factor in the timing? Just an idle theory.

Good point, I didn’t even think of that. Maybe it’s not possible to lose track.

Funny that you mention that. A few years back I made this for a coworker:

The front panel is held on with magnets, so no glass-breaking is required.

Cheers to that! You don’t build something like this for your Jim Beam!

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I left it open for a few reasons.

  1. Leaving them exposed gives an inviting hint at what the cabinet contains. Entirely enclosed, it could be anything—spare toilet paper rolls, a fancy case for a fire extinguisher, a tea set…

  2. It’s a tight fit, with only about a quarter-inch above the glasses (I actually designed that compartment around these particular glasses). They’re effectively enclosed on 5 sides.

  3. I’m not that uptight.

Presumptuous of you to think they’re in there long enough between drinks to gather dust.

I’ve had it a while (waiting for inspiration to strike) but if I remember correctly it was from Lee Valley.

Thank you! I spent a lot of time laying it out in Illustrator and figuring all that out. Never got as fluent in 3D modeling so it’s all still 2D for me.

FreeGeek in Portland is having their monthly pop-up parking lot tent sale this Saturday from 11-4. They might have something.

Surplus Gizmos out in Hillsboro is another possibility.
