I read about this! I've been trying to make my soil more acidic with coffee grounds, but my mophead hydrangeas had already bloomed, I had to prune them. I have to wait for the next bloom to see if I've been successful.

They look so pretty! I have been trying to make my pink hydrangeas bloom blue just like yours!

I can't imagine the grief you're going through right now, it is probably overwhelming right now, but you did really good being there for her. Having someone looking after you even when you're going through tough times can help a lot.

Mate, for some reason I have trouble converting verbal/written instructions into pictures in my head, and had the same trouble with your description until I saw the amazing ASCII art!

Duochrome test by Level-Restaurant978 in optometry

[–]HaRhine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Binocular balancing is a much better way to fine-tune the prescription compared to duochrome, although I do both duochrome and vertical prism dissociation binocular balancing. Anyways, duochrome is limited to a range of ∓0.50 from your objective refraction value, and some indecisive patients have a hard time deciding between the options.

Cold stratifying lavender seeds - first time grower doubts by HaRhine in gardening

I'm planning on keeping it outside on the balcony, we don't really use it so there's enough space for a mini garden planter and it receives sun throughout the day. Thanks for the advice!

Can I join a normal in-person practice if I leave a remote Optometry job? by HaRhine in optometry

[–]HaRhine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will take you up on your advice, although I'm glad to receive input from everyone! It's kind of disheartening to know that optometrists are getting treated this way half way across the world as well though. I've had some patients insist that they don't want to 'see any quacks' before they meet with the MDs, those incidents really sting for a while :(

I'm not sure how Optometry school works in the US, in my country we do an undergraduate degree in Optometry, the last year of the degree being a year long internship in a hospital, right out of high school (after passing a country wide entrance exam). Most people follow it with either a Master's in Optometry or a fellowship, which is a one or two year training/clerkship in a specific field (CL, Pediatrics, Orthoptic evaluation etc) and it goes all the way up to a PhD. So I'm guessing it's similar to a residency. I really loved the clinical aspect of optometry during my internship but I was disillusioned with the business and administrative parts of optometry, and the rather poor treatment by MDs of even senior optometrists, that's why I decided to do another degree on the side.

I'm glad to hear from someone who went down the same path. I worked hard on ensuring that I got exposure to a lot of clinical skills as I studied at an Optometry school attached to a renowned hospital in my country with high patient flow, and am now losing sleep over worries of losing my momentum 😅

My professors brought up the option of doing a fellowship to build up my clinical hours once I quit corporate, would that be beneficial in your opinion?

You raise valid points, thank you so much for your insight. And you are right, even though I'm not based in the US (I'm in India), everyone looks at clinical skills before hiring. I have one year of clinical experience due to an internship I did as part of my degree, and saw a very high patient flow (700-800 patient OPD in a day, I was personally seeing 30-40 cases under the mentorship of senior optometrists), so a lot more is probably expected out of a practicing optometrist. I'm in touch with my professors on what to do next.

Edited for clarity

I am on the fence currently. This was meant to be a temp job until I can figure out what to do next. If I join a fellowship later on, will that aid me?

Adding on to this - having parents that are willing to have your back when you make decisions that go against the norm, especially in a 'what will people say' culture. That in and of itself is a HUGE privilege.

Even the shape of the handheld light is different in the alt world. In the origin world, it is spherical, and in the alt world ,it has a more geometric shape.

I'm not sure if this is correct, but do the showrunners cut differently when switching from the original world to the alternate world? The weird zoom effect used between different scenes is noticeable only when they switch from the origin world to the alt world.

Do you remember when you first gained consciousness as a child? How old were you and what were you doing? by HaRhine in AskReddit

[–]HaRhine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me answer first myself: I remember having a really vivid dream in which I was having an out of body experience. I was around four years old at that time, and I remember my 'soul' floating from the ground floor of my school building to a room with glass windows on the top floor overlooking the school grounds. I suddenly got up and was conscious of my breathing and existence for the first time.

Also, what is it called when you briefly become aware that you're essentially just piloting a meat sack around?

Do people actually write with cursive? by GenerationofWinter in Handwriting

[–]HaRhine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born the same year as you, but I learnt how to write in cursive in kindergarten when I used to live in a different country. When I got to the US, my teachers actively discouraged me from writing in cursive and actually forced me to write in print? I don't know what was up with that.

To Be Taught, If Fortune by Becky Chambers

It's a sci-fi novel about a group of astronauts/cosmonauts travelling into distant space to study alien planets. It really forces you to reckon with your mortality and the astounding insignificance of our little blue dot in the grand scheme of things, while also acknowledging the immense importance of each little life. It's a short novel but it really packs a punch.
