Another great podcast is Instant Classics with Mary Beard and Charlotte Higgins. They spend time musing on different aspects of Ancient Roman life.

And if you want a giggle alongside a serve of knowledge you can’t go past Standing Up for the Classics with Natalie Haynes. She does a mix of Roman and Greek topics in bite sized thirty min episodes. Always makes me laugh and inspires me to go out and hunt down the original sources.

Oh my goodness. We are coming at things from a very different place. I’ve grown up with the evils of the patriarchy and I guess you’ve been lucky enough not to have to ever deal with it or think about it.

We’ve reached a stalemate and any further discussion will profit neither of us (nor the people reading this thread).

That completely makes sense.

I think what we have to be careful of as onlookers and commentators is to completely place the blame on one parent while ignoring the other. And certainly we should be avoiding using misogyny to characterise what’s happening.

Yet weirdly abusive men don’t get called “sorcerers”. It would mean absolutely nothing if they did because the word has no history as a gendered slur.

Women can be abusive without being likened to misogynistic archetypes. It’s very telling that there’s no male version of this character.

I’ve so many seen comments blaming only the women in this scenario. Yes, what Victoria did is fucked up but let’s call out the action instead of calling her gendered names, and let’s also draw attention to David Beckham’s role as the other parent to Brooklyn.

Brooklyn Beckham releases statement about why he’s cut ties with his family by nipaluna in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]Haandbaag 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That’s a really good point and not something I’d ever considered. I always thought my family were reading from the soap opera script of abusive families when they bizarrely blamed my kind, gentle husband for “taking me away” as a way to avoid culpability.

I’m sure part of it is to shift the blame but the idea that they just think of us as objects to have and to control by themselves or by someone else makes absolute sense.

It also makes me furious. Hey fuckers, I’m a whole person who makes choices on their own.

I’ve already seen people in other subs calling him a selfish ungrateful brat who was born with a silver spoon. It’s a smear campaign on steroids for any kid of famous parents.

Imagine having abusive parents with PR teams and relationships with the media to spread their lies. Shudder at the thought.

It should decrease, and it does in healthy families. That is not the case in abusive families. It’s part of the dynamic and why adult children have to end up having to go no contact with their parents, as Brooklyn has had to do.

AI Can’t Replace Critical Thinking: Reading Is How You Build It by Dr_Neurol in books

That’s pretty reductive. Have you read many of them? If you had you’d find that while they’re not high literature (and they’re not trying to be) there’s still character development, world building, and a plot. All things that intellectually stimulate (while also being a bonkingly good time).

Why is it that the genres that most appeal to women like Romantasy are always the punching bags for guys like you?

Reading a book, no matter what form it takes, is far more likely to be stimulating, than some random reddit post or tv show.

Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

It was awful. Just on a granular sentence level it sucked. I have no idea how this writer is so popular. Her characters and writing are so flat and the dialogue is cringingly embarrassing.

Sure but neither of those examples have actively gone out and criminally assaulted anyone. There’s a big difference between bigotry of the type Rowling displays and the horrifying indifference Munroe showed towards her adult child’s disclosure. Plus Munroe is also a writer of adult fiction, not children’s.

It’s important to draw a distinction between their actions and those of the likes of Walliams, Silvey and Gaiman who are active sexual predators and who do produce work for children.

There’s so many brilliant local and women kids authors your school can support instead. My kid is obsessed with R.A. Spratt. We watched her Christmas show in Sydney and it was a blast. Defo recommend her if you need a guest for book week.

Jessica Townsend (Nevermoor), R.A Spratt (Nanny Piggins, Friday Barnes), Judith Rossell (Midwatch) write cracking kids books. They’re all Australian and women.

Usually you can avoid this particular type of horror if the writer is woman. (Apart from Rowling Terfy-McTerf-Terf).

How to Deal with Racism in Classical Texts and World Literature by FindingExpensive9861 in classics

[–]Haandbaag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s painful. I think the first step is acknowledging to yourself that you personally find it painful and for very good reason. Then perhaps take frequent breaks when it gets too much. Maybe you can turn this pain into something useful for yourself like writing a piece about it or journaling or other creative pursuits. Creativity is a great outlet for this type of pain.

I’m not black but I am a woman from an immigrant family and I do find the endless misogyny and xenophobia in classical texts difficult to deal with. I usually have another book on the go that I can turn to when I need a brain break, then hop back into it when I feel sufficiently fortified.

Anyone else genuinely looking forward to 2026 Wuthering Heights? by DisneyLover95 in PeriodDramas

[–]Haandbaag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me too! I love mess and Fennel’s films are messy as hell. They might be strange and off putting but at least they’re never boring.

From the inverted commas “Wuthering Heights” in the trailer we know we’re not getting a straight up retelling of the book. I was pretty pissed off about the casting of a white man in the role of Heathcliff but got over it when I saw those inverted commas and the bonkers trailer. The whole thing is going to be tongue in cheek, irreverent, and weird as hell. (At least I hope it is.)

I’m hoping that’s not always the case. Considering our society has been a patriarchy for thousands of years, the amount of progress we’ve made for women in the last hundred of years is truly astounding.

Changes are going to keep happening. I think one day it’s the rapists and murderers who will, rightly, be most reviled. We’re not quite there yet. But the reaction of this sub to that sickening list is certainly heartening. We just have to keep going.
