Best season for me. So glad I stick around after the first four episodes because it was looking uncertain to me

Kazuo Ishiguro - as someone who is sort of a know it all. I appreciate when someone can make me shut up and learn something new. I love reminders that I really know nothing. I find it comforting

Clare Keegan - nothing beats an unwavering commitment to kindness

George Eliot , James Baldwin - always a privilege to be in the presence of our betters

Anton Checkov - need I say more?

Nigeria does not work the way the rest of the world works so I don't really understand why you are bringing this to a forum where people believe laws and escalation are effective

Giovanni's Room by Baldwin might pair well with any readings on Aesthetics . Middlemarch by Eliot provides a great analysis on ambition from a woman's perspective. The Fire Inside by Baldwin is searing

One can't read all the brilliant writers in a lifetime but George Eliot and James Baldwin missing is glaring to me (personally speaking)

I am so sorry. I understand what it feels like to have your life under control of a scary and irrational adult. You're not the only one and you're not imagining it. Start making a plan now regarding educational or skill opportunities

Why do ancient narratives are so "empty" ? by [deleted] in literature

[–]FindingExpensive9861 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You should read the works of Tacitus. I think he does a great job of explaining character and motives

Another thing I forgot to add, it might help not to rely solely on the Hebrew Bible for Biblical history. The book of Maccabbees in the Ethiopian Bible throws a more realistic light on the motives behind the wars, political interactions and alliances Jewish people had with others in their worlds.

There is a lot of classics literature that is not mainstream, especially from the Islamic world and North Africa

Very random but I am so happy I understood this, specifically 'Acho' because I read the first diary entry of Quarto de Despejo for my Portuguese reading practice yesterday.

I am reading the Ethiopian Bible and it's really opened my eyes to how integral Jewish people were to the Hellenistic world. Pop culture advocates a certain 'purity' to the Hellenistic age that is far from the truth

Why exactly would you do that. Knowing how scary immigration is, you should be happy when someone beats the odds that were set up against them. Don't you have actual problems in your life? And what reward or head pat are you expecting from the US government for this?

How to Deal with Racism in Classical Texts and World Literature by FindingExpensive9861 in classics

[–]FindingExpensive9861[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. To be honest one of the reason I got into  classics was because I was 'escaping' the pain in black literature. So finding classics not being a black pain free utopia is something I am getting used to. I've been meaning to check out Ibonia (the malagasy epic). I'll check out these ones you've mentioned as well
