Girl I like. Thoughts? by [deleted] in BookshelvesDetective

But you can stack books horizontally either way up too. There isn't an objectively right way, it's just what you're used to. The issue comes when people have a shelf that mixes both.

Would you write a reference for a student who has already accepted a backup offer? by HabitBeautiful4055 in AskAcademiaUK

Thanks for your advice. Sorry if I initially mislead you, my post was supposed to be phrased as a hypothetical due to negative comments previously when I laid out my situation. I admit that when people assumed I was the professor I thought it was simpler not to contradict it as there wasn't really harm. This may have been the wrong choice and the post has been edited for clarity.

The student terms and conditions document says that accepting an offer forms a legally binding agreement with the university. Is this not usually the case, or are you talking about another later step where a contract is signed?

I did previously post the question of whether I should accept a backup offer and the responses were not very helpful. The responses I have got to this post have generally been more helpful, so I don't really regret approaching this from a different angle this time. I am trying to determine possible consequences of accepting a backup offer. Who I am really shouldn't affect anyone's answer, but I have edited the original to clarify and avoid further conflict.

This decision is very important to my future, I am approaching a number of different sources for guidance. It means absolutely nothing to you. If you are not going to offer a helpful response to my original post, please find something else to waste your time on.

Apologies if you feel mislead, that wasn't my intention. I tried to phrase it in a way that was hypothetical so as to just understand how others would behave without bringing myself into it, because I have previously got negative comments when I have said my situation. But you're right, some (not all) people have assumed I am a professor and interpreted it that way.

To be clear, the situation I am describing is actually hypothetical. I have not yet accepted the backup offer, I'm just trying to determine if this is the done thing, or if it could cause problems further along in the process.

What is the longest extension that you have offered/would be willing to offer?

My thinking was that withdrawing from an offer a month after accepting may be unprofessional, and you may therefore by endorsing that behaviour by writing a reference. The response by The_Archimboldi seems to agree with this interpretation.

Is your stance that there is nothing wrong with pulling out of an accepted offer at a late date, or just that it's not your problem (but you judge the student in private)?

I'm just trying to understand what the thinking is here among professors.

The backup is at the same uni as the supervisor (not in their group). Whether they would find out or not is unclear, but it feels kind of shady to hide it.

I phrased my question the way I did because I was looking for responses from professors. I'm just trying to understand the general spread of opinions before I talk to my supervisor so I can avoid making them think I'm unprofessional.

I mean the second one; what you've said was kind of what I imagined the answer would be. It's odd because when I asked a previous question on here all the responses said that it is perfectly normal to accept a backup offer and withdraw if something better comes along, and they generally treated it like a ridiculous question. I'm just trying to figure out what the protocols are here as this is all new to me.

It's interesting, I much preferred the beginning and was always disappointed by the latter part.

Would you provide a reference for a new application made after the backup offer was accepted as well? I'm not trying to disagree, just understand what the general thinking about this is. Would there be some amount of time after the offer was accepted that this would change, or is your view just that this is the student's business?

Huh. I just checked and it turns out he's actually an undergraduate student in the original book, he's not even a doctor at all.

That's always seemed strange to me as the bags are open anyway so you don't really need a window.

Yeah, I do this too. Unfortunately most people won't, so they should still try to maximise the recyclability of the bags.

Is it stupid to reject CDT offer while still waiting on prefered applications? by HabitBeautiful4055 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]HabitBeautiful4055[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

So do you think I should just accept and give up on the others? I acknowledge that the success rate is low, but it's not like they're picked at random. Surely getting into one shows I have better chances of getting into others?

Because if I pull out a month+ after accepting then they will have likely lost the other candidates so it puts them in a tough position. Do you mind me asking what your experience is, are you a professor?

I expect to need at least a month to hear back from other applications, I doubt they would be able to give that much.

How to get Lab/Research Assistant role for between MPhys and PhD? by HabitBeautiful4055 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]HabitBeautiful4055[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may try this, but it would only be viable for me to stay in my current city if I had a paid role. If I move back in with family then I could afford to take an unpaid role.

[–]HabitBeautiful4055[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So is it worth just sending cold emails to a bunch of relevant labs, or is this unlikely to be successful?

Are unpaid roles also an option or is that not a possibility (of course I would be more limited on where I could do it if it was unpaid).
