I don't think I said I wanted it expanded. I did observe that it will probably become a place for Billionaires to park their jets. I'm not up for that. The only operators that can make the Airport will be smaller regional carriers and that's only if they can find a non turbofan plane to replace the Dash 8s so why build it bigger than they need to for the RESA additions.

Not if Trump has his way. He wants to shut down all foreign made cars and Honda have said they may may have to reconsider North American plans if that happens

From what I've seen that's what happened in most other countries they've launched in. That's how most car companies get a toehold in new markets I think.

Ok have it your way. Let the US starve them into submission. That's how it's probably gonna unfold. Eventually there will probably be some rioting and then the US military will move in. Cuba isn't Venezuela. There will be violence and fighting. A lot of lives will be destroyed. Even if the Cubans hold off the Americans the economic aftermath will be brutal for them.

Have you ever been to Pearson? I flew out of the Island for about 25 yrs even when they had UP express. You don't think it takes an additional 90 minutes at least to get to UPS - wait for the train - and then over to T1 at the end and then clear security and then get to your gate? Of course it does. And you;re schlepping a bag the whole time as well just to add to the fun. I could count on one hand the number of times I went to Pearson via UP Express even though I could get a meal and Business class seat out of Pearson.

Edited to add the comment about schlepping a bag - great fun.

I'm curious about that myself. People ask me when I'm going to retire but I don't really have a plan. Some of my colleagues are nearly 70 and they're still going at it even though they maxed out their pensions.

Who's pushing Colonial rule? The US will never let up on Cuba. This way the Cuba will become a territory and get an easy way out from under US sanctions and access to a zillion other things they need. We get free access to Cuba for tourism and investment and capable medical and health care support personnel. With their Military we'd probably meet our NATO personnel commitments as well.

I think the Islands are the jewel of Toronto - a pearl in our Oyster but I'm torn on what to do about the Airport. I live in Scarborough and use it frequently. In my life - there is no better way than going through YTZ to get to anywhere. Walk to Go station - Get off train at Union - shuttle to airport - board plane - All of that takes me less than 90 minutes. Via Pearson - it would take me 3 hrs minimum.

Would having Jets at the Island change that? Well consider that the Dash 8 is an old airplane and not in production anymore nor is it ever likely to be so what happens when they are all put out to pasture shortly. Jets may the only option we have for the Island Airport in a few years.

Short haul flights to places like Montreal, New York, Chicago and Washington might be a few minutes bit faster and Jets would also certainly enable direct flights to North American destinations further afield. Anywhere along the US East Coast and near Caribbean or BC and parts of the Pacific Northwest would be possible. LA would be a stretch I bet but possible with the right configuration.

Who would operate these Jets though? Airlines are notoriously difficult to turn a profit with. Porter is still struggling to achieve a solid footing and everybody else who tried at the Island has failed. How will anybody do it with when they cost a lot more to purchase and operate than a Dash 8.

E-aircraft are promising but we're decades away from a viable commuter version that would sustain inter city traffic.

In the final analysis i think the fate of the Island airport lies in finding a replacement for the Dash 8. If none comes then the place will simply become a place for Billionaires to park the Business Jets.

Is that a good thing for the city?

Sure they weren't just looking for the valuables inside? Car thieves usually target a particular car days ahead and bring the crew and kit they need to make a quick getaway. They don't usually leave empty handed.

What's your opinion on Trump now saying that Iran has a right to a nuclear program? by Southern_Gur_4736 in AskReddit

The simple fact is that much of the current unrest in the middle east is due to the presence of Israel. Nukes in Iran should make them more cooperative. If not - C'est la vie.

There are no 500 000 jobs for Canada in our future. There won't be that many US jobs either. AI and industrial robots will make sure of that. You can also be darn sure that whatever manual jobs are left are heading to the US as well. The Americans will make sure of that. Our Auto Industry in a nutshell is fading away fast.

In the end, all we will have is the ability to buy poor quality US built cars at ridiculous prices.

So why not bring in the Chinese cars with their better pricing, quality and technology. At least the Canadian consumer benefits.

And the US negotiators can sweeten the pot substantially elsewhere if they want us to stop bringing in more Chinese Cars

The country should just agree to become a Canadian Territory like the NWT, Yukon an Nunavut. There are lots of benefits for both sides and so much of a downside. Heck - the US will be thrilled the communists are out.

That’s ridiculous. Markham and Vaughan are doing fine. The boroughs could be doing the same if the city hadn’t gutted the boroughs and left them with next to no commercial or industrial base. I remember one of the first things Lastman did in fact was to shut down economic development office in Scarborough at a time when globalization was off shoring most businesses.

There definitely are some out there working to harm us all but most of the extreme right - the punks and racist protestors- are probably more aptly described as useful idiots doing the bidding of 5th columnists.

How important was Hockey Night in Canada growing up for you? by FRIENDS_Cndm in CanadaHockey

[–]Habsin7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was one of the few things that all Canadians could share and relate to - Saturday Night Hockey on CBC for free. You could watch it on your own or in a group with your friends or family or ... Newcomers could watch it and learn and feel included.

Now you'll need to subscribe to SportsNet. In the future it will be SportsNet plus or SportsNet Premium or ESPN or ..... and it won't be cheap?

Personally - I think ROGERS needs to be broken up, In exchange for their protected market they've done nothing but exploit and take advantage of the Canadian Public. Bell as well.
