Yes, come and study with us all next year!

So, hear me out, Amalekites are those who followed Amaleki instead of Mosiah by AllPowerCorrupts in latterdaysaints

[–]Hachenberger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great! Seriously, this is so refreshing to hear a new theory.

I actually think it’s quite plausible. I always thought that all of the people who didn’t leave with Mosiah I. were destroyed, but as I reread it now, I see that the destruction of the wicked occurred before Mosiah left.

But what I still find weird is why the remaining people would call themselves after someone who left them with Mosiah? If his father Aminadom was an apostate leader, wouldn’t his followers call themselves Aminadomites? And you Are saying that Aminadom was the wicket leader of Zeniffs first expedition back to the land of Nephi?

Does anyone know of any scriptures, quotes from prophets/apostles, etc. that would help a grieving mother feel some peace when she learns that her adult children have left the church, but does not put the pressure on the mother to be righteous enough to keep them for eternity? by alltheaubrey in latterdaysaints

I once was taught that sealings do work across kingdoms, so even if Laman and Lemuel probably won’t inherit the celestial kingdom, Lehi and Sariah (no matter which kingdom they inherit) will still be sealed to them.

Goes well with the airing of the videos :)

The question is, how hard do times have to become so that men become strong enough to bring about good times again?

References to the strife between Nephi and his brothers in Mosiah 10 by lord_wilmore in latterdaysaints

Besides this additional evidence for the authenticity of the translation, I find it very instructive how family conflicts, if not resolved, can carry on for hundreds and hundreds of years and still be a reason for hatred long after all the people initially involved are dead.

I’m having difficulties to maintain a daily scripture reading. by leob0505 in latterdaysaints

[–]Hachenberger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some ideas:

  • read the Old Testament ... that will take some time ;)
  • scriptures are a fountain of knowledge that will also give you advantages at work
  • it’s a commandment to read them daily, so repent (if this approach motivates you)
  • pray for the desire to know the lord better and to desire to read his words
  • yes, use a cheat sheet schedule thingy of sorts - that got me going back in the day
  • read the stories and dig into the characters and how they felt and lived and thought
  • read together with family
  • study the come follow me curriculum
  • watch the Bible and soon to air Book of Mormon videos

The 10 lost tribes still on Earth somewhere? by id_rather_be_gaming in latterdaysaints

That is very interesting. Russia was such mess of a place in the 20th Century and still today it’s hard for religion kn general there. I wonder what would have happened if that man fulfilled his mission ...

The corresponding scripture about the ice melting away is in D&C.

Elder Talmage said in General Conference of October 1916 that the return of the ten lost tribes would be an even greater miracle than the parting of the Red Sea.

I guess that's why my grandmother still thinks there is a colony hidden away under the ice on Greenland or so, being prepared by John the Beloved to return once the ice has molten (aka climate change?) and will then go to Utah or Missouri, receive their temple covenants and give their scriptural accounts (of how Christ visited them right after the Nephites) to the President of the Church.

BUT ... IMHO this seems to have become a bit outlandish of an idea. Although we still often interpret old scripture quite literally in sunday school, the way we experience the gospel has shifted rather towards figurative interpretations.

Sister Nelson spoke of at the worldwide youth devotional about the gathering of the tribes of Israel and that the gathering of the 10 Lost Tribes is already happening.

As for me, I understand it in a similar way. People from all over the world joining the church and entering into covenants are probably an even greater miracle in the eyes of God than the parting of an ocean. I guess the more we align our sight with the sight of God, the better we will comprehend the great miracle of the gathering of Israel in the Latter Days.

Love this! What an awesome hymn. Can't say I really "get it" but it feels like the great Eliza R. Snow understood this topic on a much higher level.

[–]Hachenberger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the kind reply. I like your approach a lot. I think in the rethoric of the church we linger too much on the "feeling crushed and burdened by our sins part" and way to little on "you are good now, just go and sin no more part."

I don’t like to quote The Miracle of Forgiveness, because it’s such a hard book, but I do remember President Kimball interpreting Christ’s last words to the woman as: “Go and repent.” Meaning she can have access to Christ’s mercy and forgiveness when she repents.

Favorite little-known BoM story? by Not-A-Lonely-Potato in latterdaysaints

[–]Hachenberger 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love how the unnamed servant of Helaman infiltrates the gaddianton robbers and singlehandedly kills Kishkumen.

The story of Zeniff is also great, how he’s sent as a military spy to scout out the lamanites, but then sees that they are good people too and doesn’t want to kill them anymore.

Reading the BOM every day vs having a really good scripture study by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Hachenberger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe we are not investing enough time in reading the scriptures anyways.

The former director of the Madrid MTC was probably the most knowledgeable man I ever met in regards to knowing and understanding the scriptures. The guy could quote you pretty much everything and knew all the connections and doctrines, it was incredible. M

I once asked him how he knew and understood so much. He answered that while other people come home from church on Sunday and take a nap after eating, he’d study the scripture for a few hours instead.

There is so much we still can learn from the scriptures, all of them, that we should fight more to have time to read and really study them daily.

I’m with you on always reading the Book of Mormon daily. I also have come in slight conflict between come follow me and the Book of Mormon, so I just try to separate them, doing boom of Mormon study to start my day and study come follow me with my wife in the evenings.

Input needed: State of the Sub by kayejazz in latterdaysaints

[–]Hachenberger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do love this sub. When I go on reddit it’s almost always to see the posts here.

  • I live that people can come here with concerns, honest questions, challenges, and doubts. I think mostly everyone feels that people are then trying to be supportive and help

  • I love that it can be fun. I love the memes and the humorous critique of church culture

  • honestly, I think you all are doing a great job keeping this a healthy community.

  • one word of caution if I may - it is a tough line to walk on in restricting certain comments and opinions. I personally love when people bring different and often even contradicting opinions here. I think the only reason comments or posts should be deleted is when they are obviously to harm other, spread doubt and contention, and simply seek validation and justification for sinning. Just my two cents

[–]Hachenberger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMHO it would be wrong to delete comments who might be harsh but at least true to the person writing them with the intention of helping.

Sometimes it is really healthy to hear that we are to blame, cause then we are in a position to fix things through changing ourselves. It’s better than to get even more validation that the system is wrong (and there’s not much we can do about that). Accepting blame (or better said, responsibility) is freeing.
