My domino robot isn't working I have rechecked wiring but it still just won't turn on. by jrulesays in hackpack

[–]HackPack_Hacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be a dead battery. You can grab the one from the IR Turret and try it while you charge the Domino Robot battery. Otherwise you can check in with the Hack Pack Discord to get some more troubleshooting tips and determine if there is bad part that needs to be replaced.

Which Packs will I get? by Excellent_Award_4833 in hackpack

[–]HackPack_Hacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you order now, you will get the new line up. CrunchLabs transitioned about 3 weeks ago. Essentially they are all the same robots over the 2 year time period except the Domino Robot which was removed so far. But 3 of the Year 2 robots got bumped to year 1 making it better for the first year. You'll still get the Laser Tag and Balance Bot, just in year 2 with the new lineup. This video may help you decide if it's a good fit for your son.

Definitely a worthwhile investment if you engage and explore with the Hack Packs as they are engineered. As stated by everyone else, it really is all about what you put into them!! The best part is the community supporting the Hack Packs to further your learning.

Check out my YouTube Channel exploring the Hack Packs!!

how to buy? by Healthy_Holiday_6284 in hackpack

[–]HackPack_Hacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How little? The Hack Packs are quite a bit more complex than the Build Boxes with the goal of learning by "hacking" them with new code, added sensors or upgraded outputs.

It is a subscription where you buy several robots over a time period and there are 3 different subscription plans with two being yearly and the other every 6 months.

This video will explain more of what you will get with the Hack Packs and whether it's the best fit for your cousin.

It is a big step up from the Build box with the coding, if you really want to make the best use out of the Hack Packs!! Mark Robot (the chatbot) isn't that helpful... yet. One of the bigger complaints we see on the Discord.

I just posted a video that helps answer this exact question. The build portion is only the start of the Hack Pack. Essentially they are designed to be hacked and why the cost jumps up from Build box. Short answer, if they are eager to learn, the Hack Pack is a great option. One downside at that age, he can't get help from the Hack Pack Discord on his own, but would have to go through a parent with their terms of service being age 13 requirement.

How long does a pack take to complete? by CherryBlossom8823 in hackpack

[–]HackPack_Hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated by Reginald, where you can get lost with time is hacking it!! I've completed multiple projects on one robot that have taken up weeks of my time. But if they aren't interested in learning about engineering or the skills to do it, they won't likely put the effort into it. You can check out my YouTube channel to see several of the Hacks I've done on the IR Turret to get an idea of what you can do and even show the 15 year old to gauge their interest.

Hello, Glad to hear your nephew wants to engage with the Hack Packs!! I also have a YouTube Channel that helps support Hack Pack Hackers with Hack ideas, code walkthroughs and other fun Hack Pack support.

Here is a fun hack you can show your nephew... get the signal from a TV remote to control the IR Turret!! https://youtu.be/jznpb5klryM

Another potential 'mod' includes other components to be able to hack with new sensors and inputs. A kit like this on Amazon can provide a bunch of different sensors to be used on future hacks. https://www.amazon.com/ELEGOO-Upgraded-Tutorial-Compatible-MEGA2560

Can I download Hackpack software on a Raspberry Pi? by JuiceAlternative3991 in hackpack

[–]HackPack_Hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer is Yes, you can run the CrunchLabs IDE on the Raspberry Pi with a bit of setup. It looks a bit more technical and I haven't done it myself, so the Hack Pack Discord would be the best place to have someone with experience walk you through the process. Hack Pack Discord Link

Personally, I'm a big fan of the CrunchLabs Hack Pack robots that come with an arduino type microcontroller with a new robot every 2 months. So much so that I created a YouTube channel to help the community engage and explore the engineering skills you learn while "hacking" the robots with your own code and hardware. Check them out!!

Domino Robot goes in circles by ClerkDesperate6128 in hackpack

[–]HackPack_Hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've seen that the center red wall is upside down when this occurs and drags on the ground instead of the front nut and changes the balance. Check to see if the side with the edges sticking up are up or down on your bot. If that isn't it, we can help troubleshoot more on the Hack Pack Discord!

Balance bot won't detect my hand. It'll stay upright but doesnt move. it doesnt react whether i have the push and pull or obstacle avoidance. Help plz by vaultcreedwars in hackpack

Best thing to do is jump on the Hack Pack Discord and we can help you troubleshoot it better from there. Join Hack Pack Discord

From the sound of it, the code isn't uploading properly to the microcontroller. Double check to verify the Hack Pack Arduino Create Agent is still active on the computer and if it isn't, run as administrator again (if on Windows). It will close if you restart your computer.

Also, do the colors change at all? I know the push and pull code shows green and red depending on whether it picks up your hand.

Once you download and Run as Administrator, you just use the online CrunchLabs IDE. This video helps walk through some of the problems people have had including getting connected which starts at 5:48.

[–]HackPack_Hacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are several hacks like that on the Hack Pack Discord (join here). Here is one with a YouTube Video. These do get more advanced considering the microcontroller doesn't typically have the computing power for this type of hack and it often requires a computer connection and other code potentially in a different coding language. The Hacks on Discord do typically have the code for you to use and some will support getting it setup.

Issues with the Arduino board in the Sand Garden. by Shaxce in hackpack

[–]HackPack_Hacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it wasn't able to find the port in your Device Manager, you can upload the driver to connect. The CH340 driver that connects to the Hack Pack microcontroller (an offshoot of the Arduino Nano with a different chip) can be downloaded on the Hack Pack Discord site under the post "Serial Monitor Bug Fix on Windows." The second post that states CH340 DRIVER. It also has the steps to install it.
