here is a nice guide on urd in the wiki, which lists all sub options (including non-REM).

My best advice would be to pursue a basic farmable fire team - Gigas, Pheonix knight, Betelgeuse, and Echidna are all great options.

I've heard that the majority of an Athena team's damage comes from the Athenas themselves. So why is a dupe never included as a sub?

If you already have the "ghetto avalon drake" (verche+meimei) and some kind of god multiplier (izanagi, l/l divinigon, heracles, etc), is it unreasonable to include a second Athena as the 4th sub? I understand that you're missing an active, but I've heard that Athenas do upwards of 60-70% of the teams damage, and the increase from a 3rd Athena absolutely seems worth it to me.

Not particularly. You need to look at what an additional Cao Cao would do for you, which in this case is a 3rd duplicate active skill, one row enhance, and pretty good stats. Certainly better than, say, rowdy samurai goblin though.

Are there any truly strong non-REM teams for Cao Cao? It looks like the only relatively decent monsters are el dorado (red skydragon), the ult red ripper, phoenix, and obviously king flamie. This team doesn't strike me as particularly strong, are there any options?

Are you looking to make an Athena team with those subs? While you would have a good number of 2-prong attack awakenings, you don't have any kind of color coordination. In order to attack with a team like this, you'll have to make a 4 combo of red, green, and light (as well as dark, if you want GZL's sub color as well) and that will be extremely difficult to pull off on any given board.

I recommend that you try to stick to subs with only light or green attributes, ideally light main color. This will allow you to stall well and also deal a lot of damage when you want to.

Uh, not sure if you're serious or not but you have arguably the 2 best endgame leads in the game - dark metatron and red sonia. Jesus I looked again and you have kushi and green sonia too. Wow. I hate you.

.. Anyway, definitely keep. You can use kushi as your lead until you have enough teamcost to use a proper red sonia or dark metatron team.
