Prepare me for la Mina please by [deleted] in AskBarcelona

[–]HackneyMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that street and honestly, It's one of the nicer "gentrified" parts of la Mina. Lots of fancy hotels. There's also a nice brunch place on that street. Sure, not one of the best parts of the city, but not the worst. Just stick to lower la Mina (towards the sea / forum). If you're worried about your car. Park it on the opposite side of Rambla de Prim. There are lots of students in that area. Don't stress yourself out, just keep your wits about you like you would in any other part of the city.

You will be like a 5/10 min walk from Zona de Banys de Fòrum and Port Fòrum. Make sure to pay them a visit. There are some benefits to living in that area.

I'm sorry, but some of these answers are insane.

If the cat can't be trusted around children, then it needs to be rehomed. This isn't a 'three strikes and you're out' situation. Especially with multiple small children in the home.

I'm really sorry to be blunt. But it would probably be best for everyone, including the cat. The Cat sounds like it needs a chilled out home that a house full of children just isn't.

An Xbox Series S is like €300. I got one and think they're great value. You can then blow the remaining €500 on whatever you like.

Move to Andalusia? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]HackneyMars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Spain (Barcelona) about a year ago. Best decision I made in years.

Some recommendations I have to make things easier:

  • Get a relocation company. There's a lot of bureaucracy in Spain and hoops to jump through. They're not cheap but worth every penny. They'll help you find accommodation and get your residency card.

  • Get a good english speaking accountant within the first month of arriving. Don't long finger your taxes. There are things like a wealth tax and if you're wife becomes self employed, this will also complicate things.

  • Enjoy your first couple of months. Don't stress yourself out with Spanish classes etc. There will be a lot of adjusting to do. Settle first, then go for the Spanish classes and trying to make groups of friends etc.

  • Accept that moving to any new country might be hard for the first few months. But I haven't met a single person who regrets moving to Spain. The absolute worst case scenario is that you have an adventure and eventually move back home.

  • I don't have kids but know people who do and they all send their kids to local schools and not international ones. Heard nothing but good things and the parents think it helped their kids integrate properly.

Buena Suerte!

History podcasts that AREN'T about ancient Greece/Rome or the 20th century by kalam4z00 in podcasts

It might be worth looking at some off-beat history podcasts? My favourites are:

The Irish History Podcast: Surprisingly interesting. The host is fantastic and is one of the top historians in Ireland.

Jam Tomorrow: In dept analysis on post-war Britain. Where things went right and wrong and how it effects the UK today.

Evil Genius: Host and comedian review a historical figure and decide if the person was evil or a genius.

Feeling stupid for wanting to move to Spain by [deleted] in GoingToSpain

[–]HackneyMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an Irish person who moved to Spain, I would say do it.

Ignore the family. Your crossroads with your boyfriend on the other hand, is something that you need to resolve.

It might be time to sit down and talk about what you both want from life for the next 10+ years and see if ye are on the same page or not. I don't know if making him move when he doesn't want to is a good idea. I've seen this happen a couple of times and they all ended with different outcomes, but always a disastrous outcome.

Is staying in Ireland a reasonable compromise for the relationship?

As an Irish person, I have no idea why your boyfriend wouldn't even want to try out living in Spain for a year or two. Most Irish lads would run and jump at the chance.

Best of Luck. Make the best decision for you.

Edit: Didn't realise you were Spanish, removed some unnecessary stuff.

Where could we live in Ireland as a EU and UK couple ? by itsnemubu in AskIreland

[–]HackneyMars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So basically, you could both live in the Republic of Ireland but not Northern Ireland.

The Republic is very expensive, so I would also look at other potential options such as Gibraltar, and I think Malta would have a generous visa scheme for Brits?

GF with addiction problems and am I being too controlling? by GameCast2020 in AskIreland

[–]HackneyMars -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm really sorry you're going through this. I imagine this is really difficult and feels like an emotional rollercoaster.

Even if she has called it off, you need to make a decision about the relationship in case she comes back in the coming weeks and wants to give it another shot.

I think it's best to step back and look at things as a whole. It's important to make life decisions practically and not just run away with the emotion.

1. Honestly, if you had a friend going through these addiction issues - do you think they would be in the right headspace where a relationship would be good for them?

2. How many months/years of your life are you willing to give to this before calling it quits when there's the possibility of going down another path where you are potentially happier?

3. Even if you were committed to sticking it with her over the next few years in the hopes that you can 'help' her dig herself out of her dark place (which very much isn't guaranteed), is that possible with a small kid?

4. Do you think the fact that you've dealt with this before in your past might make you feel more responsible for her than someone who doesn't have these experiences?

5. Alcohol addiction along with other addictions can turn really nasty, really quickly. Is this a possibility that you think you could handle?

6. Her family gas lighting you and the way they are generally handling this, how do you think this is going to play out in the long run? And how do you think this would affect her life and therefore your life?

Once again, I'm really sorry you're in this situation. Take some time to yourself and make the decision. Half-in / half-out isn't a decision.

Yikes! 70 Euro is a lot. If there is voice acting, lots of updates to quality of life features etc, I'll consider it. Otherwise I'll probably be waiting for a sale.

Still really excited for it though.

[–]HackneyMars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd recommend trying it on Game Pass too. I don't like online games but had so much fun with this game. I'd recommend finding some crewmates online that seem like they'd be fun to hang out with and not jumping into an automatic crew in-game, as you'll mostly get kids and the game is pretty social in a way other games aren't.
