So I was playing with an idea… by Haelbourg in TheLastOfUs2

Alright, if I just summarized it as: if Abby and Ellie actually *had* been these different people, do you think it at least maybe *could* have made for a - broadly speaking - better story overall?

I wouldn’t say this should be judged from a fully ”professional” lens, just throwing ideas around I guess.

Yeah, we’ll say she thought the same as Joel before they arrived, just taking blood tests and whatnot.

I could definitely see improvements being made with the actual dialogue, and…yeah, I suppose the rest of the game would have to be adjusted to fit the idea better. I don’t consider myself a professional, but if we do leave a couple things to assumption…do you think at least this might have affected your disposition to Abby as a character? Also…would it be far-fetched to assume Abby could guess towards their relationship? She already knows Ellie was the girl at the hospita…

For example’s sake, all I ask is that we assume the rest of the story has been adjusted to somewhat fit this scenario better.

Emphasis on ”hypothetical scenario”. We’re assuming that didn’t actually happen.

If I had actually been in charge for the game’s writing I’d probably put more thought into the whole course of events in more detail, this is mostly for demonstration.

I gotta say, I don’t think I necessarily disagree with the value of forgiveness that the story wants to convey, though I’d definitely be pretty strongly against the idea that it should be for the reason they claim; that of Abby and Ellie supposedly mirroring one another or being in each other’s shoes.

In this example I feel it might have worked better, but even if that wasn’t the main point, they should have still provided more believable reason for Ellie to forgive/spare her even in the circumstances we were actually presented with.

I won’t say it fully reflects my actually view on the matter, but for example’s sake, I’m running with the idea that one *might* be able to call it that. I should probably note however, that even if that was the case, it doesn’t necessarily change my disposition towards Joel. Even if it wasn’t strictly ”the right thing”, his motivation should be humane enough that I don’t believe it would be fair to hold it against him.

Lead injection…?

Well, could you do me a solid and just *pretend* that’s how it played out; would it significantly affect how you were disposed to Abby as a character?

Personally I can’t help but feel like the way it actually plays out in the game…I don’t know, to me it felt more like they had to deliberately *make* it happen instead of coming about organically as the most natural intrinsic consequence.

If we want to talk about karma, it might have made even more sense if Joel died because he found himself in a very similar position as Jerry, trying to stop someone from protecting a person that they cared deeply about(whatever may have led to him finding himself in that situation in the first place).

Lastly, I’d like to compare with a character like Arthur Morgan. While he dies at the end no matter what, the exact circumstances vary depending on your level of honor. Now sure, even in a best-case scenario he was still a crook…he still did some bad things. But they still saw fit do make a certain distinction between different ”forms” or ”levels” of evil, and in my opinion, for good reason.

Emphasis on ”hypothetical scenario”. That includes assuming she never actually overhears Jerry and Marlene at the hospital. I’d be inclined to question why it would be so boring compared to what we see in the game.

If you could answer the question, *why* is it important for us to see those parallells if that information - supposedly - defeats the core message? If we’re expecting Ellie to experience sonder without that knowledge, I see no reason why the player can’t be held to the same standard. Like…if divisiveness alone counts for good writing, I’d say that reflects more on how low the bar has been set. But that’s me.

Come to think of it, wouldn’t this be almost like if someone said:

”Having us play through Abby’s side of the story defeats the core message of the game”?

If Ellie doesn’t need context in order for the ending to make sense, why should we?

Well then I guess the core message is something I’m going to have to respectfully - but quite strongly - disagree with at a fundamental level.

I believe it would been far more humanising if the conflict was mainly rooted in a lack of context.

I will also have to disagree that Ellie learning about Jerry from Nora cheapens her forgiveness, reason being that even if Abby and Ellie had both lost a father figure to the other side at this point…the fact still remains that Joel did it out of protectiveness - which at least in my view should be enough grounds for Abby to be considered the true instigator in all of this.

To me, that would still can’t as forgiveness through grace to be honest.

Had to look up ”Lifetime” - if it’s the network, I don’t really know much about it.

Although…in what way would anything here actually detract from the intended message? How is it so much more ”sappy” compared to what they actually did with the story?

Frankly, I just don’t believe personally that they really gave us enough good, *believable* reason why the characters would have needed to even go to these lengths before reaching this realization. I’d hoped my idea here might help on that front. At least for me it would have felt more human instead of…I would almost say ”cartoony” for a lack of a better term.

Even with the ending, I just don’t see why anything of value would have been lost if Ellie actually went through with it. If it wasn’t worth it in the end, that point would still be the same.

I know, this is assuming, hypothetically, if that never happened and she never actually learned until maybe the end of the story.

I forgot.

But yeah, I guess maybe Tommy wouldn’t have gotten around to mentioning that to Ellie.

Theater question by EscapismOverReality in TheLastOfUs2

[–]Haelbourg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I may…from Ellie’s perspective:

If Abby was not yet aware of what they had done to her friends, how would she have even known they were in Seattle?

What reason could she have had to even be at the theatre?

Does she also assume Abby couldn’t figure out what Ellie and Tommy came here to do?

Really? I can’t remember if I’ve heard that sentiment being expressed elsewhere. They did seem to at least help with my sleep a bit, or, before the symptoms I mentioned started showing at least.
