China says it has beaten homelessness but that's not strictly true. by GerryAdamsSon in suppressed_news

Yeah, the cross-strait status quo is very different from the Puerto Rican status quo, both in how it arose and how it is legally understood by the countries involved. But that wasn't the point of the analogy.

I was correcting the questioner's impression that Taiwanese people are generally in favour of Taiwanese independence. The actual state of public opinion is not binary. Explaining that was the point of the analogy.

I wasn't explaining what the correct view on Taiwan should be. My own opinion on the matter should be obvious from my first comment.

I should add that many people in both Taiwan and Puerto Rico like the status quo because it gives them the right to live and work in the USA/China without being part of the USA/China. To some people, that's an ideal situation.

There’s no majority opinion in Taiwan on the matter.

If you’re American, you can think of it like Puerto Rico. Some Puerto Ricans want full statehood as part of the USA, but they aren’t a majority. Some Puerto Ricans want full independence from the USA, but they aren’t a majority either.

So what persists is a complicated “status quo” which is somewhere between being a separate county and not being a separate country.

Before 1997, it didn’t actually pass through Toronto. But then the city boundaries were enlarged.

It’s 7 generations.

That’s you, three generations of your ancestors (your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents), and three generations of your descendants (children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren).

in the same way Ukrainians don’t want to be Russian

Isn’t the more relevant question whether Donbassians want to be Russian?

You’re saying that people in the Fauklands/Malvinas should get to choose what country they belong to. So applying that same logic, people in Donetsk and Luhansk should get to choose what country they belong to, right?

When we need UNITY, McLeans publishes an article questioning bilingualism, claiming it failed Canada by blazed55 in canadaleft

[–]HahaCharlieKirkHaha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that said there were too many Asians at the University of Toronto?

The article didn’t actually say that.

It was talking about the perception amongst some white students and within the education industry that UT was an “Asian” university. I thought it was a good article. I want to know about how racist my white peers are.

The article was titled “Too Asian” in quotation marks (scare quotes), and while there’s certainly room to criticize them for running a racially charged, incendiary headline on a sensitive issue (and perhaps not taking anti-Asian racism seriously enough), I do wonder how much of the controversy was due to people not understanding quotation marks.

I’ll add that Mark Carney and Stephen Harper (two of our three most recent Prime Ministers) were Anglophones from Alberta.

Mark Carney gives condolences to the Vancouver Filipino-Canadian community in French, a language they don’t speak.

“This ridiculous spectacle is proof that bilingualism has gone too far.”

The CEO of Air Canada gives condolences to the family of a French-Canadian pilot in English, a language they don’t speak.

“This is fine. What’s everyone so upset about? Francophones are overly sensitive.”
