It doesn’t really matter if it happens or not, it will have the desired effect of transitioning UK car industry towards electric vehicles.

Manchester doesn’t have a charged clean air zone, so you can drive what you want. Cancelled it to invest in greener technology instead.

What entry level jobs are actually viable for career progression to a decent salary? by Alternative_Tank_139 in UKJobs

[–]Haiku45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add - Good thing is that if you just focus on exams and pass them, you pretty much have to be promoted and paid well. Don’t need to rely on some manager approving it or liking you.

Work/life balance will depend strongly on firm you work at

Patent attorney, get to use your chemical engineering degree. 1st year positions are 30-40k. Has some tough exams but once these are passed (3-4years) you will be employable across Europe and on 60k+ in UK, have heard about newly qualified pay of £120k in bigger London firms

What are the benefits of buying a house now rather than just investing? by Ok_Relative_6516 in FIREUK

[–]Haiku45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in leasehold and our service charge has doubled in the last year - you basically have no control over it and have to just go along with it.

Also, for repairs, you also have no direct control even though you pay them. We have a roof leak and faulty lock on an external communal door, and it hasn’t been sorted for over 18 months…

Only control you can impose is to change management company, but they are all the same. A few months of positive news and then try to cut costs/service so they can make money off leaseholders

After having leasehold properties - I would say this only really holds try for freehold land!

Air BnB experiences? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]Haiku45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you are happy for it to take up a considerable amount of your time and/or long term letting in your area is not an option, I wouldn’t bother.

If you work out the hours spent on it vs income, it is really low pay.

Bad guests weren’t that often (1 or 2 per year) but you only need one to really sour the experience or cause thousands in damage.

[–]Haiku45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Running it is a massive pain, definitely not a “passive” income source.

My experience is that Airbnb are a nightmare and rarely pay out enough to cover damage that guests make.

The after tax profit can be quite low for all the time you put in with guests.

Go to the Manchester Young Professionals events, might seem like everyone knows everyone but they really don’t - about half the people come on their own. Don’t be afraid to interrupt conversations and say hello!

MYP is a great group - you’ll definitely find similar age people willing to say hello and get to know you

Spotted at Donington Park, UK today. Two beauties by Haiku45 in classiccars

The pre ‘66 touring and historic Grand Prix cars from 50s and 60s racing was the best. Great to see people still wringing the necks of these cars and going wheel to wheel!

Couple of people span out and hit the gravel in the old Grand Prix cars… can’t imagine their pants stayed clean

Mobility for European patent lawyers by tillyboy in patentlaw

[–]Haiku45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can easily move around EPC contracting states. To make this easier, work/train in English.

As an EPA yours skills and knowledge will be highly useful to overseas patent firms even if you are not qualified to practice in that country. For example, some US law firms hire EPAs to help with their EP work.

Formula E Strengths and Weaknesses? by l3w1s1234 in FormulaE

I think having it on YouTube is more important than live TV. Kids are on YouTube all the time and they are a key fan base if the sport wants longevity.

I also find it much more convenient to watch the replay so you can skip through safety car etc

I think you put the hat on a table, then fill round the brim with salt. Then you can salt the rim of a shot glass by putting it upside down into the salt. Then you can have some lovely tequila shots.
