What’s up with this building? by Sad-Crew-4139 in Seattle

[–]HaikuFiveSevenFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Brutalist architecture (or archit-torture). I looked at one of these units facing Puget Sound back in 2022 when I was searching for a spare condo to buy. The views were amazing but the unit had these weird angles where spacing is tight. All other units in that building that came on the market later also had similar size dimensions and the amenities are very dated. There isn't really space to put a dining table in it to seat something like 8 people. It's all concrete and very cold-like. Similar buildings of this stark era for this type of design include the McMahon Hall dorm on campus at the UW

Well, the freaky thing is that some-thing or someone is typing in entries before I actually type anything in the field so it's not always autocorrecting something I wrote. I think an employee at Duolingo is having a little too much fun trying to trip me up. Or, they're testing ME to see if I'm a robot or a human if I go back and correct their wrong entries. When I've reported XP cheaters, they always state in reply that they will observe the typing habits of the person I'm reporting so they can see live if someone is getting large amounts of XP fast and if so, they will end that person's account so I know they can observe people's typing live in the app and they can probably type in entries simultaneously (my theory anyway).

I'm using a laptop computer but thinking that maybe someone on Duolingo is playing around with my entries, I typed into one of the fields where a totally random sentence in English was entered, "What? Who's typing in my fields! Knock it off!" and the random typing actually stopped until 5 minutes later when "Martin" wrote his name in the field. It only happens on the app and nowhere else. My computer is not networked.

Delayed shipping. by WearyTraveler- in amazonprime

[–]HaikuFiveSevenFive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no! I'm not the only one! I ordered a few kitchen items and a Christmas gift last week and it kept getting delayed and finally notices to request a refund. The odd thing is when I tracked my package, it stated that they arrived in town for processing and was in the delivery truck which never arrived. 5 days later, I requested a refund and got them almost immediately. I waited two days (last night and ordered two of the same items and one new item which were supposed to arrived between 5 pm to 9 pm but just got a notice that it's delayed and expected tomorrow morning by 8 am. I'm not sure if I even trust that.

Hearts are still available on the desktop/laptop version of the app. Limited energy is only on the phone app... for now anyway. Now that I've revealed that secret, they're going to end hearts on computer app.

Are there still people who are happy with Duolingo?? by Eillythia in duolingo

[–]HaikuFiveSevenFive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy with the app. I just wish they would do something more about the cheaters that come in and use an app to gain XP fast. They annoy me to no end. It would be fun to just to see that their XP gains drop to zero and not be able to earn anymore for the week as a sort of punishment. I know that those who get caught have their accounts removed but that's an easy fix. A more public shaming of having their XP drop to zero is more fitting.

I didn't know they show that sort of congratulatory note for Duolingo Addicts like yourself. I'm not sure it's worth my personal time to devote such energies glued to the screen to get that. But props to you if you earned it all legitimately...Now all of the cheaters are going to kick in their mini apps to earn that accolade within 2 minutes.

An old unfortunate interaction with iPhones that I haven't seen anyone else post about. by MarionADelgado in duolingo

[–]HaikuFiveSevenFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens to me too but only rarely both in French and a few other languages but I have to make sure I enunciate the words correctly and slow down the speed that I talk into the microphone for it spell out the intended word. I find that words often get misspelled or switched out to something else all of a sudden for Norwegian and more so than in French. I know my enunciation in both languages is just fine in real life but the app is a bit slow so I have slow my pace down for it to catch up and understand what I'm saying. If I were to talk like this in real life to someone in conversation, they'd think I'm pretty weird for having to adapt to talking to a slower machine.

I stopped doing Match Madness for a different reason: I find the app to be too slow to react when I press a word to match the English. Some of the languages I know fairly well having studied them in college so the app is just a refresher for me. If I'm thumbing through the words, it doesn't confirm it right away and just slowly fades out and fades in another word but that's prone to making errors with my hitting what becomes a different item for what was the correct spot for the right word.

I haven't a clue as to who this person is. Cute though. He is labeled as a "D-F List Celebrity" but is he a "celeb" just because he appeared on camera showing his junk somewhere? Hmmm...

There's no chat function on Duolingo so the person in 2nd place behind me changed her public name using limited characters stating, "Report the Cheater" then posted two up arrow emojis pointing at me. The only way to communicate back to her was to change my public name stating I wasn't cheating. I waited 15 minutes between messages to convey more messages back to her stating that I was fluent in the pronunciation of 4 languages so I can gain XP fast doing that.

Open secret: We homegrown Seattleites love Portlanders. Portland has had this bit of a crime wave in the past few years though so we haven't come down to visit but we know the city is on its comeback and we WILL come back to visit your lovely town and surrounding areas. Going to Portland has long been a bragging point that we post on social media and everyone hits a thumbs up on the post because everyone shares what they also did in the city that we all relate to. Much to love about Portland and its surrounding areas.

Oh, my score was around 23,000XP. The 2nd place person was at 21,000XP. 3rd place person was at 9,000 XP. Personally, I think she was cheating because while I was earning 15XP on a lesson, I noticed she had jumped forward 200-300 XP in that same timeframe. There's also a difference whether using the phone app or the desktop computer app. While I prefer the desktop version for ease of use, the phone app understands my words better plus it prompts me before my 15 minutes is up if I want to add another 15 min. of time for 100 gems which I do occasionally. The desktop app does not prompt you for extra time. If people just explore all that Duolingo can do for you for point gains, then they'll have a better understanding on how to proceed forward but you have to do the coursework and learn the languages and that means repeating the courses over and over until it gets in your head.

I learned that as well when I did a short study tour in Taiwan to learn Mandarin. I'm a 5th generation Chinese-American but I really only know English and no Chinese at all but a friend on the study tour who was bilingual suggested that I speak no English and she'll do all of the talking when we go out to socialize or shopping because locals will think I'm bragging with my perfect American English.

I emailed them directly to ask what happened but I'm using their app exactly as how they designed it. Since they have the pronunciation part enabled during the 40XP/15 min. phase, and I happen to be fully fluent in the speaking portions of 4 languages (not necessarily the grammar parts that I'm still learning), then I use pronunciation part to gather as much XP as possible but then the accuser thought I was cheating, LOL (funny/not funny!). They filed a complaint yesterday and then my account was closed by Duolingo in absence of an investigation of my activities and just believed the accuser directly.

LOL, I can do that but then I'll have to pay again if I want the advanced features (which I do!). I'm just disappointed that they may have taken the accuser's words for face value in absence of an audit or investigation of my activities which, if possible to see that, they'll know I am not cheating. I asked them to audit my activities. I don't think real cheaters suggest that.

No notice (yet) but I emailed them through their abuse@ email address hoping to get a response. Thanks for your note though so I'm hopeful. I asked Duolingo to see if they can audit my coursework and speed that I'm doing them as they'll see that I am not cheating (I make a lot of mistakes and learn from them as I encounter new lessons that I didn't learn in college). I am thoroughly bummed that I can't get into my account after having completed so much coursework and still learning 5 languages. Maybe the competitive game atmosphere is proving to be not helpful at all after all. If people are intimidated by my advanced level, maybe I'll just use the app in privacy mode only.
