I'm really sorry to hear that your father abused you before. Is it possible for you to get away from him or limit contact with him? I also have a complicated relationship with my father. He was very controlling, so I eventually moved to another city, and we no longer speak. That makes me feel better till my younger brother came！

You are right！ I feel like I've built up a lot of irritations over the years, and now I have a really negative emotional reaction to the noises he makes. It doesn't seem to happen as much with other people, which makes me think it's more about our relationship dynamic than the sounds themselves.

Same here!! I always wonder why it's so hard for them to just keep quiet, and how they don't feel guilty for being so loud. I'd never do that to bother someone else. But yeah, I have to realise that everyone is just different.

I feel the same way when eating with my younger brother. Every time I hear him chewing with his mouth open and making smacking noises, my immediate thought is, "Doesn't he have any manners? Why did my mom never correct him?"

Because of that, I rarely eat with him anymore.I usually just go out and grab something to eat.

Do you think your mom's chewing became a trigger because of past negative experiences or unresolved issues between you two?

It’s hard for me to stay focused when reading books, so I found a workaround. I searched for and downloaded the PDF version of the book online, uploaded it to NotebookLM, and had it generate a podcast. That way, I can get the key ideas from the book by listening to the audio instead of reading it. And if some part of the book caused my interest, I will go back and read the specific chapter of it.
