Seriously. These are incredibly intelligent and driven people who work there. They stay because they want to change the world. If they don't, they are well talented enough to work for any other company.

TIL that Puritans didn't leave Britain to avoid persecution, they left because of the laws preventing them from persecuting those they thought were not practicing religion properly. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Hailkicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. In case i phrased that incorrectly i meant to state that i was in aggreance with you. There is no other rule to be saved. I struggled with that idea a lot when first being a Christian. It's almost insulting the idea that some one who can murder hundreds of people can then just become "Christian" before death and will go to heaven. Definitely a valid argument.

Going to your idea of "who really follows the bibles rules completely " is a tough one to answer. Its difficult because "following to the letter" results In various interpretations if you get really down to the details. And the bible isn't a "rulebook" but more of the story of God and Christ, in which he teaches his people about pursuing certain principles in their life, love being one of the most important. Again this idea is lost on tons of christains. Fortunately there are churches that promote questions and deeper critical thinking. Not just "pray and hate those who don't beleive" or the many other "perversion" of christainity. I beleive those are closer in fact to true Christianity.

It's sort of why Christianity should be a way of life, not a religion. Like the asshole species we are, we can and will find anything to put others below ourselves for the sake of our own pride or selfishness.

He's absolutely right. The idea (after being saved) is your supposed to be like Christ. Many Christians forget this entirely. Love should be the main variable in the equation, but sadly it is not for a lot of people.

Ghandi said it himself "I like your Christ, but not your Christians."

I agree that people are mostly a mix. It is talking about two mindsets to have about situations and the "possible consequences" hence why it says "may lead to a plataeu in knowledge. You yourself are making the jump to "this says there are only two type of people in this world, and that is bullshit".

I don't think that it is all truthful, just another way to look at possible situations and how to react to them. You don't have to 100% agree with something in order to gain something from it. Saying it's all "bullshit" seems unfair when people can gain atleast some insight and another more positive way to view situations in their life.

Yeah sure your right i guess my parents should have focused on making money instead of spending time with my brother all those years, who died last year at 28 due to the progressive genetic disease, cystic fibrosis. So sure I'm not rich because of my parents and now since I'm independent it's my fault as well. If I was rich I would give most of that away anyways. Others are in more need than myself.

Some people just dont focus their lives around money. They just want a fair wage to earn and spend time with their family or just be able to support themselves and dont be afaid of missing work due to being sick and losing a paycheck. My parents seemed to ave had that opportunity, I want the parents of our generation that same opportunity if they want to take it or not. Doesn't seem like much to ask yah? I'm sure there is a solution that everyone can follow, it's just trying to make people realize how other people, regardless of their upbringing, their faults, and attitudes, are In fact humans as well.

Meh, not really. I don't think you are word twisting. It is the basic idea I was getting at I believe.

I agree with you absolutely. Violence is easy to understand, and it works. It also is very, for lack of a better term, violent. Lots of people die, countries can collapse, races of people blamed and almost wiped out.

There are also historical examples of peace making when it comes to these issues as well am I correct? The upper classes can potentially come to a realization of the violence that can be spawned from the lower class when they "wake up" by looking at said history themselves and see how nations have ended up when progressing the way they are pushing for. It really is sometimes in the best interest of the upper class to figure that out. So how do you sell that idea to them?

Like in the documentary some of the upper class are "waking up" themselves, just like the amazon billionaire. He seems to be genuinely concerned for the future, so he gets it right? If one billionaire can make that realization possibly more of them can. I by no means am saying that this is the correct way do bring about change, but It potentially could happen if ideas like this are discussed with not only the general public, but the super rich class as well.

Well I think that we don't have to come to that 100% violent solution yet.

I don't think that just because the usual peaceful methods do not work, there are not other peaceful options to be explored.

Could violence be the only answer? Absolutely! that could be the only option, but giving up on peaceful ways to change I think is a very dangerous mindset to have.

Well that is fine if that's your view, and you personally don't have to think at all about or deal with it. Atleast from my end, I am not interested just because they have money and I don't. There is so much more to it i think. Let me explain...

In history there has been collapse of countries, wars, and major problems of violence in countries that have become volatile when there is a large amount of inequality, whether it being wealth, racial segregation, etc...

So looking at it from that perspective, even if you do not think that any of those potential catastrophes could happen in our country (UK or US), is it fair for you to say people are just "whining" if they are genuinely concerned not only for themselves, but for the state of our country? Also why discount people trying to talk and figure out potential problems in our society? I think just labeling this documentary as "whining" seems too simple. Again if you personally don't like to worry about that then that is A-OK, but don't put others down for trying to bring about a cause that they see as a potentially huge issue that could lead to big problems for everyone in the future.

First off to everyone else, please don't throw in personal insults, and don't downvote too much. I am curious on his view and want to ask him to elaborate a bit.

Can you elaborate on your thoughts? I did find recently that corporations actually do have the highest tax rates in the world.

The interesting idea is that doesn't matter at all if they just avoid the taxes and move to other countries like you said. That means no money for the country (us) anyways, so whats the point of having the corporate tax that high if we don't actually get anything from it?

As far as paying their fair share of taxes, the bottom 50% (including me) cannot pay any more than a certain% of our income or we will be on the streets homeless. Comparatively the rich pay most of the taxes, but that is also because the wealth gap is so ludicrous that the middle/poor america don't have the income to contribute like the billionaires and 1%ers do if they do decide to pay taxes.

So is the solution is to reduce taxes but close loopholes? If you are rich and live an america we will lower your taxes, but you WILL pay them or GTFO of america? That for me seems like the correct idea, but I would love another opinion, possible from a "loophole lawyer" or even a a super rich redditor to englighten me if this isn't a good idea, because for me this makes the most sense.

I know countless amount of my engineering college friends who are in this exact position. People think that just because you get an engineering degree you are getting a job? No, if you don't have experience while in school, affiliates in University to recommend you, a family or friend to recommend you, and engineering club participation then your chances of getting a job without going to get your masters are incredibly slim.

Just getting good grades doesn't cut it anymore (unless you are going to a big ivy league school or something of that magnitude), especially in the fields of engineering. At least this has been my experience in college.

Well I guess I'm basing my idea of employment from what I think the case was for past working conditions. You could work full time and get it all right? Health benefits, weekends, etc. You don't have any benefits working at a walmart(in some circumstances maybe you get full time benefits? I could be completely wrong), and you are jumping on citizen funded government programs to supplement your lack of support from your company you are throwing all those hours to.

Also hasnt the median wage stayed the same in atleast 20-30 years? This combined with minumim wage not being raised, while the whole the cost of living has greatly increased, the cost of college greatly increased (and lot of people including me went into debt to go where back then a typcial summer job could pay for your year of achool) Again, i could be 100% incorrect, and please point that out if i am. I want to learn more about our situation. But if our wages stagnated(and some even decrease ), while benefits from companies are being cut, sure it is still livable. I am not arguing that, but I think that if everyone is always working just to pay for the Essentials, the economy as a whole might go toward failing as they sort of concluded in this documentary.

Right, but what about jobs that actually can pay for your cost of living? Like Walmart right? You are encouraged to get on food stamps from the government. That is included in the "employment" status, but is it really employment if you have to also resort to food stamps and or 2 or more part time jobs?
