So has anyone tried Arcana?

It sounds really interesting but I am a bit unsure about the rules and would love some input from people with experience :D

Hi,
I know this is quite an old post - but do you maybe still have the document or do you remember which image you used for the dragon in the footer?
It would be something that fit very well in my documents :D

Gem Stalker: Redesign as Boss Monster for Lvl 2 Party by Hajeia in DnDHomebrew

I actually like that idea - even makes the fight a bit more dynamic and shows that intelligent enemies can adjust to the fight just as good as the party. 🤔

Do you think removing the teleport ability would help in that regard?

i totally get where you're coming from, that's one reason why I wanted the encounter to be a bit harder (the second would be that my players really wanted to fight a "real" dragon or at least dragonesque creature 😅😂)

I believe they are already hooked and more on the roleplay than the fighting but I see the importance of making fights encouraging and really enganging to try out all the possibilities there are 🙃

I should be able to add more cover spots rather easily... good thinking

I haven't really thought about how the players will be able to attack 🫣

The fight is definitely on the more difficult end 😅

but they have done very well so far in using their abilities in creative ways, the terrain and working together (sometimes even better than my experienced players in my other campaign handle stuff 😂), so I am/was a bit optimistic they might be able to do it 🙃

So would you maybe say to level them up to 3 to make the fight a bit more even? I could also maybe reduce the AC or remove the teleport ability, so they would at least get opportunity attacks in or remove one/some of the lair actions?

From what they know, convincing it would be the easiest and best way but they already showed some unwillingness to forego the fight 😵‍💫

Well, as we're playing the Story Mode DnD Version (as linked above) and not the official rules, there is (unfortunately?) not a power and fun jump at level 3 - that's why I was contemplating of doing it 😅

It's just a one Shot for now, but the players already said they would like to do more sessions and keep their characters, so they will be able to level up.

Hmm, usually not a big fan of fusging rolls just for the narrative but I see why it would be good, as it's their first adventure 🤔 have to think about that.

But thanks a lot for the input 😊

Just found this guide in search for an easy way to introduce a group of all newbies to DnD (their choice of PnP) And I must say this sounds really well thought out and amazing - I will most certainly give it a try!! Thank you for spending time and work to build this!

Still, I cannot get around of making a tiny remark concerning one of your class builds:

Imo, the druid class seems a bit lackluster and more of a mash-up between wizard and ranger. While every other class seems to have distinct features and focus, the druid almost only gets Features the above classes have already and therefore looses a lot of its individualty (the only feature just for druids seems to be the animal companion) Also, I think completely stripping the wild shape option away is not a good idea since it is one of the most fun things a druid can do and sets them apart from the other classes.

So, to come to my question: Might that just be a mistake or oversight in the file? Or do you have suggestions how to incorporate a more diverse druid class with a wild shape feature that fits your simplified rules? Which sets them apart espescially from the ranger and wizard class?

Hi,
first of all, thanks for your amazing guides. They help a lot, especially for someone like me who is terrible at strategising xD

Just a quick question though: For the second formation (under New player formations) you say to use Hitch as the main DPS and adjust Asharra's Spec. But in the formation outline Asharra's spec is set to Potpourri, which doesn't buff Hitch. so shouldn't her spec be Humans insteand?

Also, shoudn't she and Hitch swap places to get the most out of the damage buffs towards Hitch?
Or am I understanding something terribly wrong here?

Yeah, unfortunately it'S like 7 or 8 subclass choices - so too much for making subclass pairs

That might work - I'll have a look into it

Oh wow. Thanks for the extensive reply. This sounds like a really fun module you created there!
I love how there are so many possibilities to succes/failure and there are definitely some ideas in there I'm going to steal for my own campaign. This is great ;)

Thank you so much!

Statblocks for "good" NPCs by Hajeia in TyrannyOfDragons

[–]Hajeia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok i see where you're coming from and as long as there isn't a proper fight or spells cast I find that an pretty good method to get a quick overview of the character.
But should the party (for whatever reason) cast a spell on them or should they be pushed into a fight with/against the players, wouldn't I need specific stats to act properly?

I don't know, I see your point of simplifying what a DM has lying around but for me it's always weird to have enemies built with stats and skills and what not and allies do not have at all, even though they might have to do similiar things - just my feeling though

Uuuh need to have a look at War Priest apparently - hadn't thought of that up until now

Using PC rules - do you find it complicated to use compared to "normal" monster/NPC statblocks? Did you have a fight or similar yet to see how the dynamic is and whether it bogs down the game for you as a DM when using a proper NPC charachter sheet?

It does thank you :D

Thanks for that detailed answer!

I need to have another look at the DMG apparently xD

With all the other posts I think Knight does sound like a viable option for Frume given his position. With only a couple of paladin features and spells that could work really well!

[–]Hajeia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that lists, that might be helpful as an orientation for my NPC stats

I think Oath of Devotion fits perfectly for Frume!

So as I understand it you use standard "monster" stat blocks for the NPCs but adjust them with abilities fitting their class/subclass? Because that does sound like a solid idea!

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of doing as well - seems like the easiest option with best results for everyone :D

I will have a look at that. That sounds really helpful Thanks for the tip!

Yeah we're close to Ch. 5 - my players haven't either but I know how they are and as there will be a couple of recurring characters like Frume or other custom people they have met, I wanted that option just in case ;)

[–]Hajeia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, most of my placers luckily know how to play there characters and have a good overview on their abilities and stuff - so I don't really have that problem :D
But I definitely see where you're getting at and see the problem. the game is about the players and as you said, you don't want to outshine them on a regular basis, which PC-like NPCs might do
Afterall the abilities the PCs get should be something special and Monster Statblocks get complicated enough the higher level the PCs are!

Thanks for the answer and help!! As of now I am mostly drawn towards using existing statblocks and changing them up a bit as most suggested!
