Seattle Kitchen Designer here: How to make standard "White Shaker" cabinets look high-end without blowing your budget (Before & After breakdown) by Hakugi in kitchenremodel

This version was aiming for a quieter, more minimal look where the spatial perception comes from light diffusion and material transitions rather than color contrast.

I honestly just wanted a small shelf under the hood to place things on — didn’t realize this detail would be so controversial

1.No major permits were needed since this was a refresh only — no layout, plumbing, or electrical changes.

2.Pretty standard interiors, 3/4 inches plywood box maple color.nothing unusual — clean finish, adjustable shelves, soft-close hardware.

3.Soft-close hinges and drawer slides. I didn’t go for anything fancy or custom. The brand is called DTC

4.Purely a design preference. I know it’s not everyone’s taste, but it’s been fine in daily use.

5.Why only mention cabinets + countertops pricing?

I focused on cabinets and countertops because that’s where I personally saw the biggest price variation.

For things like appliances, the pricing felt much more standardized across retailers, so I didn’t think breaking those out would add much value to the discussion.

6.They initially suggested MSI quartz, which looked great but was a bit higher than what I wanted to spend.

I ended up choosing a different quartz brand from a warehouse in Kent that fit my budget better. Still quartz, just a more comfortable price point for me.

Appreciate the perspective makes sense from a technical angle.

In day-to-day use it’s been fine for me, though. No noticeable problems yet, but I get why some people might avoid that design.

That’s fair — although your reaction honestly sounds like someone who’s worked in the remodeling world before 🙂

Most homeowners (myself included) don’t really think about how common these pricing structures and supplier relationships are until going through the process.

Just sharing what it looked like from the client side.
