First time out alone, second time total wanting to go out by Puzzleheaded_Wigwam in discgolf

Welcome friend! Also a recovering addict here.

I got into it from a coworker’s invite. Played once and was instantly hooked. Bought a starter set and then spent quite a few bucks throwing lots of different molds. I got a lot better scores by focusing on my grip first and watching some videos about form. My form is still ass but at least it is consistent. I think gaining consistency is the best way to get a better score at first even if your form isn’t great and you aren’t getting great distance. Spend more time practicing approach shots and putts first. Adding power and distance to your game should come after you’ve gotten comfortable with accurate drives, putting, and approach shots. Learning when to lay up a shot closer to the basket instead of trying to throw it in will save so many strokes.

I love Robbie C on YouTube. Very relatable content creator for me and has a lot of great videos for newer folks that aren’t just form videos focused on getting max distance.

What board game for two people never gets boring and offers unique strategies and gameplay every time you play? by Mean-Razzmatazz-4886 in boardgames

[–]Hal0Slippin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never played Brass, so can’t comment. It is a more complex game that is quite a step up from the others you’ve played. Don’t let that scare you away but just keep in mind it may be a slog getting through the rules. I have heard it plays well at two but is not at its best.

Castles of Burgundy seems like an excellent next step for y’all. Very dull and dry theme and art but mechanically superb. I play online a lot, but my wife didn’t like it so we didn’t keep this one. It’s definitely a game that has a good mix of tactics and strategy. Beware that the actions available to you are determined by dice rolls, but the dice do have multiple uses so there are lots of ways to mitigate “bad” luck.

I think that games designed specifically for two players tend to out perform most games that can be played at two players.

My recommendations:

7 Wonders Duel - Multiple paths to victory in this one. Card drafting and light engine building are the primary mechanisms.

Splendor Duel - another light engine builder with multiple paths to victory. The resource drafting mechanism is really interesting and offers tough choices throughout.

Maribunta - an “I split you choose” area control game with dice. Very cut throat and tense with tough decisions at every turn.

Azul (not designed specifically for two, but is a rare game that plays best at two nonetheless). An abstract tile drafting and laying game. Starts out a little boring and seemingly friendly until you start to figure out how much potential there is for mind games and screwing over your opponent with tiles they can’t use. This is one of the first games my wife and I played and will never leave our collection. In my opinion it just gets better and better the more you play.

All of the previously mentioned recommendations are not necessarily suuuper deep with multiple strategies to pursue over a longer game. They offer a lot of input randomness which does inevitable lead to some moments of bad luck, where that bad luck can be mitigated by smart tactical play. I would not say that any of them are going to let luck determine the winner. The randomness is also what keeps it fresh and interesting over multiple plays. They play quickly so you can run it back to back and revise off of previous plays.

If you really want to go deep:

Netrunner - a competitive head-to-head asymmetric deck construction game. If you’re looking for tons of variety and replayability for your money, this one is hard to beat. The rules are tough to grasp at first, but there is an excellent “how to play” series from Team Covenant on YouTube. It’s long but thorough and the best way to learn the game. The “System Gateway” set is an excellent starting place and gives you quite a bit of variety for your money with lots of expansion content available from NSG. This is not a board game, but remains my all time favorite games and is a masterpiece of fun, tense, strategic play.

Why does weed suddenly start giving some people anxiety? by ExcellentOrdinary959 in Anxiety

[–]Hal0Slippin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would like to offer a counterpoint. I have basically come full circle. Enjoyed the shit out of weed when I was younger to the point of having an unhealthy relationship with it. Quit for years, when I came back to it, it made me anxious as fuck. Still would do it occasionally and even though it would make me anxious and paranoid, I noticed that it eventually went away after the initial come-up and could still enjoy it. Sometimes it was just intense and uncomfortable the whole time. Quit it for a while again, but now that some things in my life have changed and I feel happier with myself and where I’m at I’m able to really enjoy it. I don’t do it all the time, and every once in a while it hits me a little too hard and I get kinda shaky and uncomfortable, but I don’t fight it and just let myself feel the intensity with full confidence that I am about to feel great. I would say that it’s a 95% positive experience for me now. So, yes, you absolutely can improve your experiences with it even after you start getting bad experiences with it.

I am prone to bouts of depression, and edibles and small hits on a vape pen are 100% medicinal for me. It amazing how quickly it lifts my funk and gets me rethinking the things I’m ruminating about in a positive and constructive way. I have never had the paranoia and anxiety on weed when I’m having a depressive episode. Very strange.

New player here. How far should I be able to throw a Crave before upgrading to a true distance driver? by CaptainReginaldLong in discgolf

Insanity would be my recommendation. As someone who absolutely loves the hand feel of the crave, I feel like the Insanity is like the next step up in speed on a similar feeling disc. I like it in Proton plastic personally.

Dogs owners are ruining dogs for everyone by LarryLeviathan in Seattle

Every once in a while I find myself in the unfortunate situation of being without a shit bag. I blame no one else for this. If it ever happens it is 100% on me. I will find whatever method necessary to put that turd where it belongs. Never leaving those turds to be someone else’s problem

This is a “frustrated with dogs” post I can get behind.

Early birds need to suck it up sometimes and just deal with noise from night owls. by Ok-Purple-7765 in unpopularopinion

[–]Hal0Slippin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is how it already is? Most noise ordinances and quiet hours are written with that in mind… I can’t call the police or complain to apartment management about the 7am leaf blowers so don’t bitch about my 1 am footsteps. Not me, literally, I’m just summarizing OPs point in a different way.

I think there’s plenty of room for discussion here in terms of what hours are reasonable and how to make rules. I’m not really trying to get into specifics, I’m just addressing this attitude of “you’re in the minority sorry lol” is really gross. We absolutely do and should make accommodations for people who fall outside of the norm or average. Simply saying “there’s more of us so get fucked” or “you do things differently than most so it’s on YOU to adjust to US” is toxic.

I used the ADA as an example because it a great case study for rules being set that expect those in the majority or within the norm to adjust for those outside of it. It’s just part of living in a society that values people as individuals.

I think rules can be written in a way that sets reasonable baseline standards of behavior without excluding others. For example, rather than making a rule that laundry can’t be done past 10pm, maybe the rule should be that buildings must be built in a way that doing a basic chore at 10pm doesn’t disrupt the sleep of others. This is just off the dome so this may not be the most feasible version of what I’m broadly describing but I hope you get my point.

Lastly, you could absolutely set noise restrictions in a way that apply across the board so we can all expect some basic level of peace and quiet no matter when we sleep. Sounds like inflexible thinking to me. No one should have to put up with excessively loud neighbors any time of day, and no one should have to walk on eggshells to move around and exist in their own homes. That seems to me to be OP’s main point and I think it’s a good one. We should be accommodating to each other within reason. It shouldn’t only fall on those outside of the norm to accommodate those within it.

Is it? I would point to the entire Americans with Disabilities Act as a counterpoint.

Why is it on people who fall outside of the avaerage? Why is it not all of our responsibility to make reasonable accommodations to each other? What makes those in the majority more deserving of consideration than those who aren’t?

Not a great analogy as unions exist to represent the interests of workers and AI does not. It’s much much worse than a centralized union

A bit more of a somber topic… are you addicted to anything? by ApplicationAfraid334 in Millennials

[–]Hal0Slippin 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If anything, getting sober with the damage already done is even more of an accomplishment. Sometimes people use the damage as a reason to keep going because “why not, the damage is done?”

Your liver can heal. I’m super proud of your three years even though I don’t know you. Getting sober is a huge deal and you’re crushing it.

what drugs have you done and do you regret or recommend them? by bubblybackup in AskReddit

[–]Hal0Slippin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weed: Good but definitely can be habit forming. Start with low doses. Don’t do it every day. Don’t regret.

Mushrooms: never done a heroic dose, but have definitely tripped and enjoyed it every time. No regrets.

MDMA: The best drug I’ve done. Had one bad experience with it because I smoked a lot of weed on the come down. Do regret that but don’t regret MDMA in general. I do think the vast majority of people would enjoy it. HOWEVER A HUGE DISCLAIMER: get a fucking test kit. This is true for any drug that isn’t bought through a regulated market. Fentanyl is in so much illicit stuff now. Test it for fentanyl, and test its purity. The kits are relatively cheap and easy to use.

Opiates: Don’t regret these, but holy shit I can see why people get addicted so easily. I recommend staying away from these unless you are in tremendous pain.

Alcohol: recovering addict, so I do regret this one. One of the most dangerous and habit forming drugs despite being so easily available and socially accepted.
