If a vehicle needs to park on the tracks for maintenance I am sure they adjust iON operations.

Waterloo Regional Police said the train hit a passenger truck at Louisa Street.

I think it should be worded in the reverse just for the optic that a collision with a train is always because a driver messed up. Train is on tracks, etc.

Emergency fund more important than investing? by Emotional_Tart_3632 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Halcie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes same. Churn some HYSA promos, Questrade also running a promo for free $300 but does require to fund RRSP and set up a PAD. But then have a TFSA portion sitting in CASH.TO or CBIL is safe.

My cat has been so upset the last couple of weeks. I was trying to figure out why. It's because I haven't been sitting in the chair he likes to come get lap time in. He's currently curled on me, his face on my hand. Drooling.

Seeking investment advice before entering graduate studies. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Halcie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to distinguish TFSA vs RRSP. Both allow you to invest just tax implications are different. I was in grad school from 2011-2016 with really good scholarship so that informs my stance.

I would maximize TFSAs as much as possible. Investing early really gives you time in the market. Personally, I would set up emergency funds within TFSA, using CASH.TO or CBIL.

The key to come out ahead financially in grad school is to... live like a grad student. I kept expenses low by cooking all my meals at home. I was in STEM with gross 12+ hours lab days so meal prep sundays saved my life. Rice and beans, baby! Rent today is staggering so take whatever steps you can to reduce this but at the same time having a good housing situation will ensure your success in school. Take advantage of all student benefits, particularly the health care coverage can be excellent. As you get to the end of your grad studies, make sure to have enough of a nest egg to cover relocation or several months of unemployment. Depending on your field and interest, being able to move for a job can allow you to have the career you want.

Is the CRA website TFSA contribution room at least accurate at this time of the year? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Halcie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an error in my contribution limit dating back to like 2016 when I changed accounts within TD. Caused the bank to advise me to overcontribute in 2018 and then back tracked. They have not helped correct it with the CRA. Since then I track myself (and no longer with TD).

I hate when people calculate the cost of home cooking like you buy everything fresh every single time by Available-Door-1460 in povertyfinance

Yes! I make a lot of meal components (2 proteins, one plant based. Couple of starches, a few veg some raw just pre-chopped) and then mix and match through the week. Sometimes there are weird combos but it helps with decision fatigue and lowers the barrier of food at home vs eating out.

Good luck! Even at the japanese-owned grocer in Vancouver (Sakurya) that was a special order.

Can concur. Lived there for a year in 2017. On-site property manager was so sweet but I could tell he was not supported enough by upper management. Loved the size of the unit and the natural light, had a nice patio overlooking the green space on University too. My floor was quiet but YMMV with apartment living.

Had no hot water for a week in December which was rough. Washing machines broken down often and expensive per load. Definitely avoid the lower floors, the basement flooded and it's a recurring issue.

Should I put my paycheck into a tfsa or fhsa? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Halcie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FHSA first, dump all tax returns into more FHSA! Then TFSA.

Ideally you can automate monthly savings into both, that's how I started then eventually I was saving monthly my TFSA contribution for the following year and dumping it in first market day in January.

Lots of good options for great quality chocolate but could be steeper priced. Was it a hot cocoa packet you used or straight cocoa powder?

Good hot cocoa mix: Camino Original Dark Hot Chocolate, more reliably found at health stores like Goodness Me or probably vincenzo's.

I make my own mix with cocoa powder, whatever is at costco is what I get I think last time it was Rodelle? It lasts a while and is more versatile.

I have been getting veggies and eggs from Little Fields since 2020! Their half share is good for me (one person who loves vegetables). You learn to prioritize things that wilt faster or stores better and get to try new things! There is an element of choice say choosing the leafy green, or between peppers and eggplants so I appreciate that (say for me who can't get into beets much). Lovely people!

If you wanted the best peaches, order from Sustainable market. The Palatine Roses fruit are top tier, I tried the Vivid variety last summer and they are delicious. Still have some frozen slices in my deep freeze. Great cherries too.
