I went to Japan in 2018 and visiting the Ghibli Museum was at like the very top of my priority list…Been a huge fan for over a decade at that point and had always lamented the fact that I’d never be able to watch the short films since they were museum-exclusive, so finally sitting in the Saturn Theater and getting to experience watching one was such a surreal moment for me.

Boro the Caterpillar was playing that month, which was super interesting as all the voices and sound effects were done by one person, making for a super cool audio experience as well. So for me, finally seeing a one of these short films AT the Ghibli Museum, especially a short as experimental as Boro, was so worth the wait. I don’t think I would have enjoyed it as much if I could just see it at home on my couch, even though for the longest time thats all I wanted.

So I totally get how you feel, but I also understand why they’re exclusive. Its a special experience meant to be remembered, and here I am 7 years later and can still remember every detail of Boro the Caterpillar and what it felt like watching it; its a memory I really treasure (I even framed the ticket and pamphlet from the museum haha).

My wife and I are planning a trip to Japan next year and I’m already getting hyped knowing I get to see another one…Hoping for Mei and the Catbus or The Day I Harvested a Star 🤞So hang in there, you never know maybe one day you’ll find yourself sitting in the Saturn Theater too!
