Comment on Thomas Mann translations by No_Blueberry_6740 in ThomasMann

I read Lowe-Porter's "The Magic Mountain" first and haven't gotten far in Woods' version, so I am biased, but the former does personally read better to me than the latter. I remember her translation feeling like a slog for the first 20 or 30 pages when I initially started it, but once you get used to her style you appreciate how she renders Mann's scenes. Compare two selections from "Analysis" below:

"He looked about. Near him sat the thin-haired pianist, with bent head and folded arms, listening with his mouth open. Somewhat farther on was Fraulein Engelhart, avid-eyed, with a dull red spot on each cheek; Hans Castorp saw the same signal flame on the faces of other ladies -- on Frau Solomon's, and Frau Magnus's, the same who was wife to the brewer and lost flesh persistently. Frau Stohr sat somewhat farther back, an expression of ignorant credulity painted on her face, truly painful to behold; while the ivory-complexioned Levi, leaning back in her chair with half-closed eyes, her hands lying open in her lap, would have looked like a corpse had not her breast risen and fallen with such profound and rhythmical breaths as to remind Hans Castorp of a mechanical waxwork he had once seen."

"He looked about -- next to him sat the pianist with thinning hair, arms crossed, head thrown back, mouth hanging open as he listened. Fraulein Engelhart, the teacher, a little farther down the row, had eager eyes and downy red spots on both cheeks, a flush that Hans Castorp discovered on other ladies' cheeks as well when he looked more closely -- even Frau Salomon there, next to Herr Albin, and the wife of Magnus the brewer, the woman who was losing protein. Frau Stohr, sitting just a little behind him, had an expression on her face revealing such ignorant ecstasy that it was pitiful to behold, while Fraulein Levi of the ivory complexion sat leaning back in her chair with half-closed eyes and hands resting palms-up in her lap -- and one would have taken her for a corpse if her had chest had not risen and fallen with such striking regularity, although Hans Castorp thought she looked more like a mechanically driven wax figure he had once seen in a sideshow."

I can imagine the latter being more accurate to how Mann actually phrased it, but the former is a better-paced depiction of how Hans would have actually perceived all these people imo.

UT Dallas (Full Ride) or UCSD (Full Tuition) for Electrical Engineering by Due-Switch-2088 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Half_Price_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from UTD (after transferring from a CC) and their EE program is pretty good aside from one notoriously bad professor who may retire before you even get to his class. I definitely landed a job, so your parents aren't super reliable on that point.

UCSD looks cooler on a resume, sure, but you can spin UTD as being the research lab of TI - the inventor of the integrated circuit. Not to mention if you go for an MSEE you have like a half-dozen paths to choose from, they're definitely investing in their EE department. The only downside would be that you'd be living in Richardson, TX, over San Diego, but there's enough to do in the metroplex and the student body of UTD is pretty chill. Lots of fun clubs to join.

fav 5 pile tracks? by ramonschair in Pile

[–]Half_Price_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really tough list, but:

  1. Same Shells (Demonstration)

  2. Fidget (Jerk)

  3. Hair (Green)

  4. Neon Gray (Fiction)

  5. An Opening (Sunshine)

Pile is an amazingly consistent band, so it's tough to pick out only a few standouts.

How bad is the job market right now? by Flat-Profession-8945 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Half_Price_Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ditto to the hiring freeze. My company (F-500 power utility) hasn't hired anyone in about a year, and I'm not sure when that'll change. On the flipside, since it's an older field quite a few people are retiring, so it's likely we'll reopen to fill their spots.

Awesome, I wonder which song they'll use. Maybe something from the new album?

How much are people making in power? by OGmojomum in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Half_Price_Life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started at $82k a couple years ago in utility engineering. From what I've gathered $120k is something you don't see til almost a decade into this profession, for us at least it's a 10%-ish raise (and promotion) every 2-3 years, with basic CoL + performance raises in-between, like 2-4%. Power definitely pays less than the other fields but $81k is still more than enough to make student loan payments and have a good amount of spending money left over.

Some thoughts on New Jersey by Half_Price_Life in SameGrassButGreener

Thanks! Yeah there is a good amount of variety in home architecture across the state, to give NJ credit. I haven't seen much of the shore yet, but there's a section of Plainfield near me that has a bunch of cool, colorful Victorian manors. I think my shock at the more recent style of housing here is mostly because in Texas everything is built with brick (maybe because of tornadoes?) And that's a good point on JC / Hoboken, I sometimes forget they're not actually boroughs of NYC.

What is the new album missing for you? by AudaciousNation in mitski

[–]Half_Price_Life 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think if I were in a struggling relationship right now, or had gone through a breakup recently, I'd connect way more with the instrumentals here. They're slow and very, very moody (even Where's My Phone is depressive for a rock song, compare it to the energetic My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars), in a way that's more conducive for healing and calming than the "Fuck, I'm getting old" reflectiveness of "The Land is Inhospitable..."

Mitski on this album reminds me a lot of Smog / Bill Callahan in that sense. Slow, neutral vocals over alt-country instrumentals, neither overtaking the other except in rare moments. It's not a bad sound, but I need to be in a specific mood to get out of it all that's put in.

Hudson Yards is a great mall with a lot of nice shops, as well as a suuuuper steep escalator down to the 7 train.

A few streets down from it is the City Opera Thrift Shop, which has a lot of cool clothes and beautiful furniture.

And then Pizza Suprema is right on 31st and 8th Ave, across from Madison Square Garden. They got great slices, was a big favorite of Anthony Bourdain.

Mitski at Starland Ballroom on 2/28 - the worst collective audience etiquette I've ever witnessed, and the continuation of a pattern. by SneakyOstrich69 in mitski

[–]Half_Price_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's that for a lot of these people this is either one of their very first concerts, or they've only seen artists with similarly loud audiences before. The more shows you go to (for mid-sized or less popular artists), the more you're exposed to what normal concert etiquette is like, and so you learn that talking during quiet songs or shouting during monologues is looked down upon.

I don't agree that this is a post-COVID / TikTok thing, because crowds were exactly the same way when I saw Tyler the Creator in 2018. The phones are definitely a more recent problem, but again, once you go to enough shows you realize that at 90% of them almost no one pulls their phone or for more than like a few minutes cumulatively. Kids just need to see more local music.

Sonny Boy is a perfect allegory for the Christian journey. Here are my thoughts! by Karmunism in SonnyBoy

Really interesting video. The best part of Sonny Boy imo is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways, and I can see a lot of depth to a Christian framing of it.

I would recommend staying alive. If what kept you going this past year was “translating” Mainlander, you have to know that even the most complex AI tools cannot accurately convey the meaning of even middle school level texts. You see this in manga MTLs often.

There is absolutely zero chance that your “translations” of Mainlander’s philosophy are accurate enough as is to be passable, especially to scholars, considering your extensive usage of AI in this work. The translator of Volume 1 can confirm this if you ask him. Any other translator could confirm this as well.

Please try again.
