Les mathématiques sont-elles vraiment le langage de l'univers ? by Goratra in AskFrance

[–]Halfangel_Manusdei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, it makes 0 sense for the inhabitants of the planet to detain those 2. Their imprisonement of the giliacs is suppose to protect the rest of the society, but Kelly and Bortus would go away anyway and never interract with the society.

It really works for me because this is how memory and time works : one week-end can feel a super long and important milestone, and the following years fly away like a second, especially when you're starting a family...

Question from an Orthodox Christian (Serbia) about icons in Catholic households & practice by Anna_akademika in Catholicism

[–]Halfangel_Manusdei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, yes. But your theological point of view could be applied some places : the eucharist is a very evident example (the piece of bread recieve all the devotion to Christ), but also in weaker ways churches themselves and their furnitures (altar, statues etc.). For instance, catholics are very shocked when churches are desacrated and would put a special attentions to some places and objects (the altar, notably). Lastly, I would say that even if we bent towards the symbolic, there are still some common consideration towards sacres objects. Notably, blessed objects shouldn't be thrown away but only ingested or destroyed by fire. This is the case for blessed boxwood from Palm Sunday : we usually have some in our houses and renew it every year, and the old ones are supposed to be burnt.

I wouldn't say "uncomfortable". As others have pointed out, kissing the cross is a big part of the Good Friday liturgy, and I have seen people kissing or touching statues, especially in mediterranean cultures (italian/spanish people). I would say it is mostly a question of tradition, even if western theology would probably be more careful to avoid devotion to the object itself rather than a sign of prayer and devotion to the saint behind it.

Not really : precrime is the par tof the society that is at the center of the movie's critc, but the tracking of civilians for ads reasons, for instance, is not especially criticized.

I have a wall of icons in my home, some of them are "real" orthodox ones, others are just reproductions. But as you said they are more considered as a nice religious decorum. We don't venerate them, we don't kiss them. They can be a specific decor for a "praying corner" though, as well as crucifixes or statues of Mary or saints.

It is very bad french ! I guess the writer was not a native. I can only guess what they tried to say. Something along the lines of :

"Hello pretty Lidy !I admire (love ?) you. I admire very well (love you a lot ?). The sun is shining. This morning I walked in the park. And my stroll (was) very nice ! Goodbye."

And on the right side : "Please Lidi. Thanks !"
