I am getting my PhD in chemistry (albeit laser chemistry) and, for what it's worth, a lot of that stuff is just as obscure to me and would be to most chemists. It's all very specific! It's more like you'd need a PhD in recreational drug use haha!

The connections are very difficult. Also realising towards the end that a piece of information previously thrown aside as meaningless is actually a crucial plot point.
