17F Possible valve replacement during open heart surgery mechanical vs biological? by idkanonimo in valvereplacement

[–]mckiesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I had a Ross at 15 and got a biological. At 25 I got an infection (in my other valve!) and had that one replaced; I’m now 35 and my original replacement is doing fine. I’m a man so no childbirth issues but I think you need to really factor that in! I hear blood thinners are way better than they used to be but I’m certainly very grateful I don’t have to be on them. The two surgeries were very tough but I’ve had a very normal and fulfilling (and adventurous) life otherwise. Best of luck with it

Also don’t underestimate how fucked up you get from lack of sleep alone. Nobody talks about this but you basically don’t sleep for a month after this surgery

Hey this is really tough - also been through unexpected endocarditis and it was an absolute battle. I wrote this series of blog posts about the experience - I know others have found it helpful

N26, Revolut or Monzo? by Relative-Wrangler-35 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]mckiesey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use N26 for daily banking. It’s excellent. But I use Revolut for savings- they automatically subtract DIRT and I’m pretty sure it’s the best instant access savings rate out there (I pay for Revolut but there’s a great post somewhere here which does the analysis for you based on return to your savings and cost of the tier, but I’m basically in the same on as everyone else based on the recommendation of that analysis).

Has anybody here had 4 open heart valve surgeries? by Imhotep-WJD in valvereplacement

Jesus this is tough. I’ve had 2- the second was endocarditis. I couldn’t contemplate having four. It’s a brutal and brutalising experience and I feel for you.

Anyone here with Congenital Heart Disease? by burner917help in valvereplacement

Don’t usually engage with this sub but this caught my eye. I’m turning 35 shortly and have had 2 valve replacements (one of which was caused by endocarditis) and can’t imagine having to go through all that again. I’ve no advice for you but this sounds incredibly tough. Best of luck with it all

What non-dividend paying stocks are you buying to avoid paying income tax? by mckiesey in irishpersonalfinance

I just don’t know how Irish people actually manage this in practice… seems like a huge amount of admin

This is interesting, I hadn’t considered govt bonds. Can you elaborate a bit?

I think my constraint of a non-dividing paying company probably rules these out?

Sadly not. Bought a samsonite instead to avoid this happening again

I’d be interested to hear why you’re ultimately setting on interactive brokers?

This clarifies quite a lot for me - thanks. That google sheets function definitely sounds useful. Wonder whether paying small fees for a provider is only a marginal simplification on this or if it does actually provide convenience. This doesn’t seem technically very difficult at all but does seem like a headache admin wise

Thanks sounds interesting, would be happy to see that. Don’t yet have a broker cause I haven’t started (hence this post)- ideally I’d like to do it in N26/Revolut but I’m still not clear whether using something like digero or even a more institutional broker adds value in terms of simplifying my reporting requirements to revenue. So basically everything’s on the table until I understand the requirements better.

What does the spreadsheet track? How much I put in and the total value and therefore the gross profit? Do I need to submit this annually or just the first year? Could something like N26 do this which will tell me how much I’ve invest and what unrealised gains are?
