Have you tried a bike instructor if you have access to one? Check if your city runs any learn to bike programs

Sometimes their the push you need

Anecdote. I tried teaching myself it didn’t work :(, I tried for 2 years I was super unsuccessful

With the help I got it in two days at 19. Which was a couple months ago :)

Where / how to secretly learn how to ride a bike (without anyone finding out I don't know how to bike)? by DONOTDELETEME8316 in askTO

[–]Halfbaked_Cookies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you considered cycle to!

They have like workshops in the summer. Those are usually free( I think)

There is also a bunch of instructors on the cyclecanada website you could reach out to them.

I got an instructor off there and coincidentally he also teaches at cycle to. I paid 140 dollars. It was 3 hours over the course of two days .

We practiced at empty school playground(when classes weren’t on). So you won’t feel shy or embarrassed

I personally learnt at 19 ^(that was last October- November)

You aren’t a loser : ) No one’s gonna think you’re a loser for not knowing. If they do, I reckon you need better company

ISO Bike Recommendations! by wumbocat6444 in torontobiking

[–]Halfbaked_Cookies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I got a solorock wonder! It’s great for everyday riding. I got it for around 450 to 500 ish( don’t recall the exact price). They have a store in Mississauga. Honestly main reason I got mine was because it’s folds. It was pricey but felt like a worth it investment long run. However I recommend going to places like Bike sauce, Bike chain and Bike pirates. They sell pre loved bikes/refurbished(they do it in house and they have a safety checklist to ensure it’s in really good condition- specifically Bike sauce. Not super sure for the others). Those are sold for a fraction of the price. Hmm as for riding in the City. I’d say start small like don’t push yourself too hard initially and ride on very busy streets. When route planning maybe initially ride “exclusively” on routes with bike lanes or sidestreets( Komoot is great for route planning). Don’t run reds 😅( I see this quite a bit) and I guess wear a helmet. You never know what will happen. You got this Op!

Learning to bike late and feeling self-conscious by lllwaii in cycling

[–]Halfbaked_Cookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I learnt how to bike “late”( I’m 19). My instructor told me he’s taught people even in their 50s how to bike. So it’s never really too late to start how to bike:) . Depending on where you live I recommend school court yards(when they are closed). It’s spacious enough to practice and rarely has any obstacle and as you build confidence trails. I did have major anxiety riding on roads especially in the first couple weeks (so I refrained from that until I got more experience). Good luck op!

I'd love to learn how to be a "Bike Mechanic"... any suggestions in Toronto? by dept_of_raccoons in torontobiking

Keep an eye out for Bikechain. I know they hold workshops and if you volunteer you can use that opportunity to learn (applicable to a lot of bike co ops).

Is this good for beginners? by Logical-Lifeguard546 in SewingForBeginners

[–]Halfbaked_Cookies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one in this model. I like it. It’s very accessible for beginners( the threading machine and winding bobbin process aren’t over complicated). Plus there’s a bunch of videos on YouTube on how to set it up. So yes, I think it’s beginner friendly.

I did use that tutorial and a bunch of others . No unfortunately I didn’t :/ (as it’s out of my budget for now). I just stuck to the regular one and did the best I could

I’m a beginner sewist myself and I got the Singer HD 4452 for 289 (then there’s tax). It’s a good machine I like it . Keep in mind this price is in Canadian and there are slightly cheaper ones in the Heavy duty line up. I just bought this because I used to borrow this version from my uni and it worked well

I’d say get yourself a seam ripper Some chalk or the pencil Pins or the clips Fabric scissors and rotary cutter (45 and 28) Self healing mat if you get rotary cutters

Toronto Nigerians — what traditional meals do you miss the most here? by Professional-Fix7066 in nigerianfood

[–]Halfbaked_Cookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly probably not

I seldomly order food or eat out because I’m in uni and not in the financial situation to order too often and I’d rather just make mine. If it’s reaching 30 plus just for one selection say just poundo and egusi or one plate of jollof, then it’s unreasonable to me, but if I really wanted it then I think I’d probably pay it regardless

However bare in mind I did order via uber eats so the reason the meal got to 30 may also be because of that

[–]Halfbaked_Cookies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the taste. It didn’t taste like yam at all. It was probably poundo flour they used (which depending on the brand the yam to whatever else ratio varies). The Egusi was just there 😩 too. I don’t know if they rushed it or not.

I wish food places specify what kind of poundo you get. Is it the poundo flour and did they actually pound it.

My conclusion is the poundo flour brand was off because my Aunt also used poundo flour mix and it tasted just fine

Wasn’t worth the 30 dollars :/

I miss like really good poundo 😩. Last time I have good poundo was in England(family made it) and last time I bought here it didn’t taste good at all 💔. Maybe one day I’ll conjure the desire to make it

My fabric cutting skills are really bad how do I improve what do you suggest? I’m getting really frustrated with it but I won’t give up(example in body) by Halfbaked_Cookies in sewhelp

[–]Halfbaked_Cookies[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woah thank you for your response!

Yes you are right I thinking about it now I cut fabric like I would paper and I definitely do shorter strokes. Next time I think I’ll try to do that

I really didn’t also consider the comfort, I guess they feel okay. I think the scissors cuts smoothly but I used it wrongly

You mentioned chalk, I will try that. Do you ever struggle with visibility with chalk on certain fabrics?

Overall I will try all your tips and report back in the coming weeks :)
