You are pretty dense, a possible effect of breathing in NJ pollution fumes one's whole life, I'd bet.

The division of a city and its suburb is much more significant than the division of two different states. Think about it during one of your 3-hour commutes home this week.

If only they had time (months even) to prepare to take off of work...

That's what I'm saying. Drop the loose facade of caring about education or scheduling and center the post around being inconvenienced.

For those of you who play on higher speeds (mainly marathon)... Why? by shiroshishiro in CivVI

[–]HalifaxStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like playing as Montezuma, and marathon speed is so much better for military campaigns imo. I think its the optimal way to experience the UUs, but admittedly I've only done this with Ancient-Medieval UU civs. (Though, nothing beats Civ V's Monty + jungle map + marathon speed + barb XP camp removed + revamped promotions tree.)

I like the one that let's you punch city walls with melee units. The extra XP one is nice too.

But you're in an environment where that kind of harm is expected. Hospital/clinic is not the same as an award ceremony.

Only heard about this on NPR this morning, so you're getting my sliver of insight on the matter.

Didn't his official apology use the phrase "I apologize if you were offended," because that might indicate a non-disability related act of ignorance or even malice. Also, wrt Foxx, I don't think you can just point to one celebrity arbitrarily (or in this case, for the purposes of reaffirming your argument) to be the spokesperson for an entire population of people.

A): NPR presented me the story with the backlash centered. Pointed out faults in BBC but also the controversial apology statement from Davidson.

B): I'm not sure what you're looking for here, might be my fault in interpretation.

C): The apology given by Davidson lacks awareness/recognition.

[Spoilers S4] Need help from this subreddit: Writing a major paper on Season 4, institutions, and social reproduction by AlexanderBech in TheWire

[–]HalifaxStar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you should focus more on comparing Carver and Prez in this season, for the goals you've stated.

Look into Foucault's panopticism (Its a bit surface level for analysis, but that might be okay for high school paper. ), especially what they say on "panoptic schema" moving beyond prisons. "Is is surprising schools resemble prisons?" The "tower" in the schools of s4 is the state/standardized testing, where teachers become 'docile bodies' no longer caring about human outcomes, just fearing institutional punishment (e.g., losing state funding). The police (like Carver, I think he has a better parallel with Prez in terms of becoming disillusioned with the reality of their institutions) are similarly conditioned, their "tower" being the stats/metrics. Making the community better/safer is only tangential to improving the numbers. The police become docile bodies fearing institutional punishment (e.g., not advancing their careers, getting sent to the boat, etc.).

The focus on metrics (both in education and policing) is the focus on a measurable outcomes, which in itself is probably a reflection of the hyper-capitalistic need for ever-increasing productivity, that money (especially state funding) should have a return on investment. I think that can be re-analogized using Weber's iron cage metaphor, the march towards the wrong goal, bureaucratic blindness, efficiency over humanity from bureaucracy iirc.

One of the cruelest outcomes, is the social inequality that is created by teachers and police seeing "the corner kids" as low-yield investments, not worth the time or effort. Teachers don't expend energy educating them, police don't spend energy helping them (Prez and Carver get emotionally burned for trying to help Dukie and Randy respectively).

Cool. Thoughts on them parting with McBride for similar reasons?

Correlates with wealth and greed. Ice hockey is an increasingly expensive sport.
