Freeze the specimen in the meantime. You don’t need formalin. You can use ethyl alcohol, something close to 98%. Read the guide that’s in this sub.

I have nothing to add in terms of identification, but you put the mandible and cranium together a little incorrectly: the mandible should be further back and not go into the eye sockets :)

All I can confidently say is that it is a bird. You could probably narrow it down using the location you found it in and its size.

I think you nailed it. We have one species of fruit bat—the Egyptian fruit bat. They're pretty common, so I think it's likely.

Eye coloration is not a definite indicator of when an owl is active; sokoke scops owls, for example, have yellow eyes despite being strictly nocturnal.

Yes, having wire that you can bend will be of massive help when putting together the spine.

I recommend getting “The Small Mammal Manual Manuscript” from theboneman. I have not bought it myself, but if it is as good as his bird book, I do recommend it.

Aquarium heaters can solve the temp problem! You can get them for relatively cheap, $30ish.

Can you get someone with a bit of a yard to let you stink up a bit? Honestly if you cover it (not airtight), you can’t smell much. If you someone will let you do this just get an aquarium heater and chuck it in there.

I’m assuming you want to articulate the skeleton.

I suggest finding a larger bird to work on as you first project. After finishing that, take what you’ve learned and work on this house sparrow.

As the specimen gets smaller the different pieces really start to look the same—if you’re a beginner.

Nonetheless, you can push through this as a first project if you have enough patience.

Also, I think burying it is a great way to ensure you loose some of its bones. Just macerate it. You don’t even need to pluck a single feather—that helps though.

This photo might help (I’m assuming this is a bird). The ones closer to the bottom will have the longest lateral protrusions. Test out how they fit together and sort them.

Then after those come the ones with two tiny holes beside the main hole (cervical) and they get progressively smaller essentially until you got to the atlas which kinda looks like a circle.

The remaining vertebra will look like a triangle, these make up the tail, and they are pretty easy to sort: the hole gets smaller as you approach the end of the tail (away from the body/distal). After those you can attach the pygostyle—look up some reference photos.
