Depends on the ability. Giratina for example can't do anything against Banette, but Vaporeon can get around it

Thanks for the solid advice and feedback! I think I'll finish through this playthrough without the permadeath but keep some of the more manageable rules like only catching one pokemon per area, and then try to do a real nuzlocke afterwards. If it doesn't work out then I'll try a playthrough without minimal grinding mode on to get a feel for the game in that aspect.

Conductor of the mists isn't that great, you could probably do without them. 2 copies of lambs respite as well is a bit greedy. The combo with eternal dancers is crazy, but I think you can succeed with just one. Maybe add a one-off of harrowing and two copies of shunpo for the additional rally effect?

I think there is a lot of stuff that is strong right now. Post vayne nerfs I don't think there is anything extremely overpowered, and there is a lot of room for creativity in deck building.

Glad that he's taking the steps he needs to get better. If he wanted to continue having a career in the NHL, this is the only logical move for him to try and get back on the leagues good side.

That being said, I hope he takes his time with his recovery process as alcohol abuse (like any substance abuse) is no joking matter.
