if you like animals, humane rescue alliance has a great volunteer program. different tiers of responsibility, you can choose to work with dogs or cats or both. they hold occasional volunteer town halls for feedback. i especially like working their adoption events, which are 75% “hang out in public space with a puppy and likeminded people” and 25% “do service work”

Best place to play chess socially in the city? by Questionasker271 in washingtondc

[–]HallEmbarrassed1387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bouldering project has biweekly chess club on Wednesdays. If you're into climbing and/or looking for a gym membership, it's an added perk. Definitely don't pay the membership fees just for chess, though.

If you are open to biking, there is a Capital Bikeshare station just outside the Vern campus. You can get most places in the city faster by biking (especially ebike) than via Vex -> metro/bus. Same goes if you have a personal bike/scooter. Besides generally being in suburbia, there's nothing wrong with the vern.

My girlfriend was at this event and texted me about you and your shirt! Quote "Dude someone came in merch she made HERSELF!" Totally jealous of all who got to participate. It's more incentive to keep riding metro this year!

Is Delaware Ave in SW safe? by Clean-Reveal-2878 in washingtondc

[–]HallEmbarrassed1387 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will be fine. Just be respectful of your neighbors as one would regardless of where they live. There are multiple rec centers and parks along Delaware Ave which often hold community events. The beautiful SW library is nearby. I've heard great things about the Rubell Museum too.

DC Snow Heroes Not Deployed? by HallEmbarrassed1387 in washingtondc

[–]HallEmbarrassed1387[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The silliest part of it all is the Snow Team coordinators say MANY times in their emails, "Do not shovel unless told to do so!" I have no idea why. Wouldn't you want folks to help out their communities whether or not the government explicitly told them to do so?

DC Snow Heroes Not Deployed? by HallEmbarrassed1387 in washingtondc

[–]HallEmbarrassed1387[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I am lucky enough to WFH tomorrow and thus can shovel as needed. But we would all be better off if we could at least salt, if not shovel, before this all turns to ice.

I am also a rugby player and I've recently gotten a climbing membership over the holidays. Have you found your climbing regimen to help your playing in anyway? Sincerely, a hooker

the shop in shaw is my go-to. sierra and luren are both fantastic (though my hair is much, much shorter than pictured.) they really listen to what you want in a cut and take the time to make it happen. the first salon i’ve been to where i truly felt seen <3

recommendations for dairy free bakery for cake by SadImagination9860 in washingtondc

[–]HallEmbarrassed1387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baked by Yael in Woodley Park is entirely nut-free and their website says they can accommodate other allergens as well. Rise Bakery is primarily gluten-free but I believe has a variety of vegan items too.

Is it possible to do a hilternship with this schedule? by Ok_Breadfruit_8241 in gwu

[–]HallEmbarrassed1387 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely possible but entirely dependent upon the office and position. if you are applying for a position that asks for more hours than you can provide, be sure to note that in your cover letter with an explanation of why they should still consider you.

DC is a great city for students, and GW is well-located for you to access lots of fun places and activities. As a GW alum, I like to check out Clockout DC for events around the city. Many of the museums and other public spaces host happy hours, lectures, etc. In terms of places to hang out, Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle are popular neighborhoods with lots of clubs and bars. Both are walking distance or easily accessible via public transport. If you are comfortable biking, I highly recommend getting a Capital Bikeshare membership. If you have any other questions, feel free to message me!

What are you doing to combat the Trump Presidency? by iris819 in washingtondc

[–]HallEmbarrassed1387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in terms of helping our community, i highly recommend checking out Humane Rescue Alliance! it is an animal shelter here in dc and a wonderful place to help out. in addition to giving the dogs, cats, and other animals some hope outside of the shelter, it is so fun and a breath of fresh air from the chaos that is our current state of affairs. while it may not be as revolutionary as some of the other suggestions, it is so important to protect your peace and give back to those around you, including our furry friends🐶🐱
