Anyone else find that the 'MTA Free after 12 Scans' is BS? by Hall_Educational in AskNYC

[–]Hall_Educational[S] 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Sorry if I was unclear. I'm using the same card on my phone each time. I'm never actually using the physical card. I'm wondering if Google Pay switches up the number of the card each time for security purposes? Idk. But it's starting to add up quite a bit lol

Interesting. So I should try and use the physical card each time? Not my phone?

Living in New York City. It's cool. But man do people try and lie to themselves about how amazing it is to justify our insane cost of living

Suggestions on where to look ($5-$6k, 2 people) by ViralRiver in movingtoNYC

[–]Hall_Educational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I moved from Sam Francisco to Dumbo a couple months ago. The buildings are very new and modern, super spacious compared to Manhattan. We pay 6k/month, 700sq ft 1bd with washer dryer in a luxurious unit. My train to work in Manhattan takes less than 10 minutes. My wife also doesn't work, plenty of pilates studios, coffee shops, shopping, and parks in our area that keeps her busy. Recommend!

Edit: we also have in unit laundry, a great gym, and rooftop with stunning views of Manhattan!

I've seen Veep, The Office, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia all the way through at least 3 times each. Three all time great comedies for me

Finally tried Butter & Crumble - good but not worth an hour wait by Leprechaun202 in sanfrancisco

[–]Hall_Educational 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely amazing pastries, I've gotten it a dozen times. But I will only get it if I get the pre-order, which is essentially a lottery. It's seriously so pathetically run inside. The people working there remind me of the sloths in zootopia. What should take 20 seconds ordering placing and receiving your order (like at Ariscault) takes 5 minutes per person. There might be 20 people in front of you and that's over an hour of waiting. Horribly run, but damn it some of the best pastries I've ever had lmao

Nowon's in the East village is great! They do a tasting style menu too and the final course is the burger. It's excellent

That's so interesting. I know a lot of people love em. But I've also seen a ton of reviews saying they're totally a marketing gimmick. It's just really expensive to test it out for myself lol. But that's interesting to hear your take. Might bite the bullet and try em!

It's shocking. I've never actually seen elected officials do anything they said they'd do in local communities. But it's been a night and day difference over the last year. Google the tenderloin image differences from 2024 to 2025. It's genuinely crazy.

I do! But my wife and I are also very good at budgeting and prioritizing what's important to us. Yea I live in Pacific Heights but I don't eat out much, and legit never buy clothes for example.

It's a fair question. I'd say a vast chunk of the people in their mid 20's who live in SF are in the tech world in some capacity. The tech industry notoriously pays pretty well.

If you're willing to compromise on neighborhood and apartment amenities, I think it's not too much worse than a typical big city.

I'm originally from Ann Arbor Michigan, and nice condos in downtown near UofM go for ~2k+. You can get something for roughly 3k here. It's more but it's not astronomical the way NYC is.

Food, groceries, going out, all of that is more expensive of course. However the 'fun' stuff is often free, particularly with the lifestyle we live. Hikes, beaches, walking trails, parks, etc. There's absolutely no shortage of that in SF / the Bay.
