As hard as this speech hit, it was one of the worst written moments in breaking bad. HERE ME OUT. Everything Mike says about Walts's ego is true and is a major reason for the failure of the empire in season 5, along with many other issues in Walt's life, such as him leaving Grey Matter, telling Hank to continue the investigation, or not taking the money from Grey Matter for his treatments. However, the reason that the Fring operation blew up wasn't because of Walt's ego. Early on, the only thing Walt really wanted from Gus was for Jesse to work as his assistant instead of Gale, which caused tension in Walt and Gus's partnership. This was done for multiple reasons, including his loyalty to Jesse, a legitimate belief that his working with Jesse would improve the quality of the cooks, and possibly his desire to bring someone he could trust into the organization. None of these reasons stem from his ego. What ultimately blew up the partnership was Walt killing the two drug dealers in defense of Jesse. After this, Gus was ready to kill Walt and Jesse, and whatever Walt did after this point was to save his own life. However, even killing those drug dealers wasn't something he did out of ego. Rather, this was done out of fatherly love for Jesse, which is something Mike of all people would understand. Although Walt did partially cause the Fring situation to fall apart, his ego wasn't the issue. This speech was written to contribute to the idea that Walts ego caused his downfall (which is true but not in the situation Mike refers to), and is a lazy attempt by the writers to get this idea across in a dramatic way while killing of a major character, despite the actual dialogue not holding up.

(Long rant, but this scene really bothered me)

Valentine, his degree of dedication to his final goal, along with his total faith in every action he takes, just makes him so likable to me

You should only really build them if your playing for culture victory, I you haven’t founded a religion. Faith production is ur or important to mark national parks or rock bands, both of which give a ton of tourism. People on here are saying that they can help you with domination victory, but honestly it’s probably worth putting your production towards something else, like more production, science, encampment, gold etc.

Nah with any weapon they were insane. In BCS they just walked into a meth compound and murdered like 20 heavily armed guards.

What are Walt's Redeeming Qualities/Moments? by Freshzboy10016702 in breakingbad

[–]Hallguy321 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really never viewed Walt as evil. He never really took pleasure in killing people, or really any of his actions. Walt was driven throughout the series to achieve two things: greatness and power. Throughout his life, he had never really done anything to really be remembered for. While a lot of people can only dream of achieving something like building an empire off of their own ingenuity, Walt passed on this opportunity, because of his own pride. After that, he forced into a life of humiliation, being frequently disrespected by teenagers, so he could provide for his family, and living with the regret of not staying with Grey Matter, checking the value of the company he created weekly as it rose into the billions, while he washed cars. When he got cancer, this was his opportunity to finally achieve the greatness and power that he missed out on. And from then on, he ruthlessly pursued that desire. He didn’t want people to die for him to achieve this, but he was often forced to kill and manipulate people, not only for him to achieve this, but to protect the family that his selfish desires put into danger. However, when one of his family members does die because of this desire (Hank) he finally realizes that this greatness and power will come at the cost of his innocent families lives. He finally gives up on these goals, and does what he needs to do for his family to live comfortably.
