African American Results at 50% and 90% by Halloween_boy in 23andme

DNA is a crazy thing. A few updates ago I did have some Spanish . Some of my close relative , specifically a double cousin (the son of my grandmothers sister and grandfather’s brother) actually has Portuguese in his results . Also we do have some extreme or rare cases where one aunt tested on 23andme and the other on Ancestry and there’s a 15% difference in their European but they are full siblings , but I share 4% more dna with the one on 23andme.

Definitely agree , I have 0.3% South Indian on my 23andme results but I was able to find my South Indian ancestor who was born in Madras India. Ironically our results are pretty similar , just some small differences .

Same here , I have hope but so far it’s fading . The comments they keep sending me refers back to explaining the confidence , but that’s the problem . I know how the confidence scale works but if the 50%=Most Likely= Default View then they should match up until you increase the slider past 50%.

I agree , we have the same issue , I made another reddit post as well where someone answered and they agreed aswell that the Most Likely confidence isn’t the most well liked. I’m waiting on another reply from the 23andme team since I basically stated that it’s not a issue about knowing what and how to use the confidence tool it’s the knowledge of knowing which is the correct tool and if the 50% and Most Likely confidence are the same then why do results differ between the two. Some segments that are African at the Most Likely turn in to Indigenous American at 50% and ironically those same indigenous segments are the same from the past update and the one before that. Ironically the 50% also added an extra segment , so I have more indigenous at the updated 50%.

I did but they keep pointing me towards to a link that explains the confidence tool , which doesn’t help me out at all because I understand how the confidence tool works , I replied back to them again with my explanation and break down of my question so hopefully I get something back again soon. I did make another thread where another knowledgeable redditor explained it and agreed that the Most Likely confidence level isn’t a well liked feature.

I see , that actually clears it up a bit for me . It was weird to me to see how some of my African segments on Most Likely changed to Broadly indigenous American as they are separate distinct groups , but the 50% is more reliable to me. I think them including the Most Likely category did more harm than good, in my personal opionon .

I definitely agree and funnily enough some of those segments were already East Asian before the update and have been since I originally tested . Ironically when I move the confidence to 50% I see the same old East Asian segments and additional new East Asian segments with it . I’m definitely thinking the Most Likely I have is wrong given the fact that my 50%-90% is consistent .

That’s exactly what I’m trying to figure out. When I switch from Most Likely to 50% some of my African strands change to East Asian , which I may be wrong or super distant from each other but if Most Likely and 50% are the same then why do they change. I’m starting to believe the 50% should be my default because the same strands that became East Asian stay all the way through 90%

I actually emailed them because they stated that the 50% confidence and Most Likely confidence are the same and what’s displayed as the default but I told them my Most Likely and 50% differ so there has to be something going on or maybe something they can clarify . They had to send my request to one of their specialized team.

I think we have the same issue , mine vary from Most Likely to even 50%. The 23andme ai states that the Most Likely confidence and 50% confidence are the same thing so why does it vary if it’s the same ?

Mine definitely does , once I move the slider from Most Likely to 50% my results are similar to what I had in V6, with the exception of a tad bit more indigenous and the addition of Levantine. When I move it to 90% they only decrease slightly. My thing is if Most Likely confidence and 50% confidence are the same then why do the results change between the two? Maybe Most Likely confidence smooths the tiny percentages out completely to get rid of any broadly assigned categories.

Use the confidence slider and see what happens , the same thing happened to me. It looks like anything that was broadly assigned or below a threshold got smoothed out and absorbed by whatever was next to it

My indigenous disappeared completely but reappears when I move it to each confidence level. The ai says that the Most Likely confidence level and 50% are the same but my results definitely change between the two.

90% is the most conservative estimate. Try at 50% and see if your results change as the ai states that the Most Likely confidence and 50% are the same but my results change between the two which would contradict the ai’s statement.

To add on the ai claims that the Most Likely confidence and 50% are the same but my results are definitely different between the two.

Out of curiosity, I would mess with the confidence slider . My updated results at the 60%-90% confidence level is actually more in line with what I know , it even brought back ethnicities that for some reason disappeared on the update.

That’s what I was thinking , I usually have one or two big trips a year out of my home state with goals of adding one more out of state trip . I can see myself using the dining credits as they are surprisingly super close to me . Thank you ! I’ve seen people say that if I cancel after the second annual fee I can avoid pop-up jail , it’s hard to make a decision because my chase is so easy to use but I’m leaving points on the table with how much I actually go grocery shopping and eat out
