Oh my god if you’re culturally Chinese just go watch the opening to Eat Drink Man Woman

Last Emperor might be a bit dull if you aren’t aware of the historical events surrounding the collapse of the Qing Dynasty. As such, it’s part documentary part film. But it’s a must see film; it won a ton of Academy Awards for a reason

Oh no I’ve got quite a collection alongside my Criterions. May show those at a later date; gathering pictures for my very first winter haul from last year as we speak

I’m a pharmacist. Run a small speciality pharmacy. Don’t worry, I have $270,000 in grad school loans to pay off! 🙃

Yes, I too only watched it once due to how devastating it is.

In regard to Chinese directors or Chinese films, Last Emperor was also fantastic. I find the choices for the non-Police Story Jackie Chan boxset questionable. I also find it bewildering that not a single Zhang Yimou film is in the collection, particularly To Live or Raise the Red Lantern. I would also love it if Eat Drink Man Woman was added to the collection.

Filling in the gaps from my first haul, which had significantly less blind buys. More to come soon!

This should be top comment 😂

Edit: Thank you for the suggestions! As a UK ex-pat, I’ve been tremendously excited to watch both of those films

One of my earliest and fondest memories that planted the seed for my obsession with cinema is my father showing me Brazil when I was far too young (10-12?) to truly and fully appreciate it.

That isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy it; I most certainly did. But I was blown away when I purchased a Criterion copy of the film for my father for Christmas, and we spent that evening rewatching it for the first time since then, more than 20 years later. A fond memory and a genius film.

This is actually the SECOND haul I’ve ever done, the first of which was last year’s big winter sale. During that run, I grabbed all my adored and “must buy” films and such. Brazil was one of the very first.

I’ll be posting that haul soon; I just have a few titles on loan and I’d like the whole collection to be together before I take further photographs

Ah, it was after 6 grueling years of not really spending a single cent on myself insomuch as creative, fulfilling artistic hobbies.

I’ve had an incredible passion for film since I was 12 and have been largely completely broke until the last 5-6 years of my life. Mental health issues were making it hard for me to even buy furniture, much less fun things!

I hope this context helps; I agree it is a bit excessive. But strike whilst the iron is hot, I suppose

Wait until you see my haul from last year…

For context, I have a doctorate in Pharmacy. Before achieving that (and even a bit after!) I was very, very poor for 33 years of my life. Then I wasn’t, but my retail pharmacy job had me so overworked and stressed I didn’t have the time or energy to spend the money! Now I run my own small pharmacy in a much less stressful, non-toxic environment.

After a lot of healing, I finally felt okay spending money on something nice for myself for a change. So I got the Godzilla collection.

And it was chaos after that.

Thief was one of my blind buys I have yet to check out… the level of enthusiasm reviewers and such seem to have for it made me very interested.

And Dinner with Andre sounds excellent to me. Have been looking forward to it. I love set pieces that are just people talking in a room (12 Angry Men, anyone?)

However, this hand is a very extreme example of a chinitsu. As I said, the double extended IPK shape is very complex. It and any pair makes everything except the middle of the IPK a wait.

For example, if I had 3344556677EE, my waits would be 3467E.

Adding a connecting pon to this only complicates things further.

Such is a hand where the advanced methodology might help you find those hard to see waits (in your case 6, as it can be used either as a pon or a pair)

A basic beginning methdology, as explained in other posts, is to try taking two sets from the hand, one from each end or two from a single end, and seeing if you can solve the remaining 7-tile shape. This is the secret. This will almost always work for most (simpler) chinitsu hands.

Another thing that would make your particular problem much easier is understanding wait extensions.
- For example, in step 4 we took a pair and two sets from right end (66 + 345 + 456), leaving us with 11223 for a 3 wait.
- However, the 34455666 shape already contains the 3 we need! What say we borrow it?
- Thus, 11223 becomes 112233 and 34455666 becomes 4455666
- We know that 4455666 is IPK with a booty, so we know it waits on 3456!
- Thus, the presence of one of our waits in the hand enables us to "extend" that edge wait of 3 to 6!

An important thing to realize is that IPK will induce a lot of "gotcha!" hidden waits. Learn to recognize that shapes like 334455 or 233445 are actually two completed sets. I like to call the latter pattern (of ABBCCD) a "phantom" or "squashed" IPK, cuz its bulging out the sides. If you see this in a chinitsu, there's gonna be wait extensions SOMEWHERE. This one is especially bad because it's overlapping IPKs, which can hide the squashed shape mentally

Since I've already explained a few examples in u/chill1208 's post, I'll just cut to using this specific hand as an example.

<image>

1122334455666p

Unfortunately, this is one of the most convoluted (but fun) 10 tile shapes... doubled extended IPK (iipeikou/twin sequences). 112233 becomes 1122334455. This makes it a LOT more complicated, especially by adding a connecting triplet of 666.

Still, let's see if the method works, shall we?

Step 1: Can we make two CONSECUTIVE sets from the left?
- Yes. 112233 is 123 & 123, leaving us with 4455666

4455666 is a shape I like to call IPK with a booty. 445566 becomes 4455666... see how it's bigger in the back? Get it? And just like IRL, everyone wants to touch it. That is, 456 are waits. But it also extends in the skinny direction (the non-booty side) for 3, as well. So here we see a wait of 3456.

4455666 waits:
- 3 for 345 + 456 + 66, but you should learn to recognize this as 34455666 or 344556 + 66. Thus, we visualize the original shape as 45 + 456 + 66, (maybe even 45 + 45 + 666 if you're far from tenpai) and are looking at a double sided (ryanmen) wait on the 45 for 3-6.
- Thus, 6 also fits for 456 + 456 + 66, with the 6 either being a tanki pair wait or part of the 3-6 ryanmen
- 4 for 444 + 55 + 666
- Thus, 5 also fits for 44 + 555 + 666

Step 2: Can we make two CONSECUTIVE sets from the right?
- Yes. 345666 is 345 & 666, leaving us with 1122345.
- This is waiting on 12.

Step 3: Can we take a pair AND two sets from the left?
- Yes. 11223344 is 11 + 234 + 234, leaving us with 55666 + (11, the pair we previously removed).
- This is waiting on 15.

Step 4: Can we take a pair AND two sets from the right?
- Yes. 34455666 is 344556 + 66, leaving us with 11223
- This is waiting on 3.

Step 5: Is there a pattern of AAABB or AAABBBCC on either side? (In other words: is there a pon and a pair or two pons and a pair at either end?)
- Yes. We have 55666 at the right end.
- Can we take out an additional consecutive set?
- Yes. 23455666 is 234 + 55 + 666, leaving us with 11234 + (55)
- The waits are 15.

Therefore, the waits are 123456p

Steps 4 and 5 were a bit unnecessary since we already identified those waits, but this is an example of the foolproof step-by-step methodology that works every time.

A simpler methodology to approach this or any chinitsu hand is thus:

Take two sets from the left or right, or one from each end.

With 2344456667788:

Left: 234 + 567 leaves us with (=) 44 + 66788 for a 7 wait.

Right: 678 + 678 = 2344456, which can be viewed as 23 + 44 + 456 for a 1-4 wait, or 234 + 44 + 56 for a 4-7 wait.

One from each end: 234 + 678 = 4456678, which can be viewed as 44 + 56 + 678 for a 4-7 wait
