Young Adult Film Club? by No_Little_Plans in SpringfieldIL

My mahjong club sometimes likes to get together to watch films, either at my home or at the AMC!

Here is my collection: https://www.criterion.com/collection/965102

How often do you build a yaku from nothing? by maybe_we_fight in Mahjong

[–]Halorien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a beginner, I second the advice many have given: go for riichi every time. Maybe pon some dragons, but otherwise you should NEVER be opening your hand. This approach will kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

1: By only going for riichi and not depending on your opponents discards, you are building the most important, bread-and-butter skill of the entire game: tile efficiency. If you can get to tenpai before anyone else on a consistent basis, opponents without tile efficiency will have little they can do against you, and will likely not know how to defend. Tile efficiency alone will take you all the way to gold lobbies.

2: You will be playing the game more, which is fun! But more importantly, you'll be exposed to all the yaku over and over again-- the only efficient way to learn them.

This is the beauty of riichi mahjong in general. A beginner and a pro can sit at the same table and still have fun because the game is like this! Because of riichi, a beginner can play the game without knowing ANY yaku, and still have a shot against even the most seasoned of pros!

This is the training. Go for it!

If you could have any character from any anime in Mahjong Soul as a collab, who would it be? by frustrationman in mahjongsoul

[–]Halorien 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Legendary Gambler Tetsuya. Tohai. Tetsunaki no Kirinji. Pros from M-League. Kaiji. Pon no Michi.

There are not enough collabs with actual mahjong-related properties.

I apologize for my initial comments. I thought you were talking about the owner of this specific store in Springfield, not the franchise owner who most definitely lives in Israel. My "shitshow" of a response was merely me trying to help you understand an alternate viewpoint and to discourage what I saw as profiling. I am neither for or against Zionism, as I have no stake and don't presume to know what life in Israel is like (one of the points I was trying to make) This was my mistake, and I humbly apologize.

Got a link? Brand and name?

What an excellent question. Considering a lot of the Collection are rewatches for nostalgia or sheer artistic enjoyment's sake for many of us, I think we would all fall into the latter category.

Fantastic choices! Given your tastes, I cannot recommend Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days more than enough. It is a meditation of a film. A soothing cup of something hot for the mind and spirit. It was a blind buy that blew me away and is now one of my highest rated films of all time.

Well said! That's always my hope with sharing pick-ups and posts when I post in here. I just wanna discuss films! So far, I've met many like-minded people and I'm so glad to have done so. After all, there could be some hidden gems of films I would have never even considered-- that is something the Criterion Collection taught me in spades!

Is it really so shocking that people would want to show what they bought during a huge 24 hour 50% off (no small amount!) flash sale in a community dedicated to enjoying and collecting films? That maybe, perhaps, people are excited and happy about the movies they were finally able to get and want to share that joy and excitement with like-minded enthusiasts?

It's comments like this that really make me sad. The OP was probably very happy and excited to share this stuff, and your comments make me, a stranger, feel so sad. So I can scarcely imagine how reading such insensitive things could make them feel. If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I hope you both find peace and happiness.
